Description

Distilled in small batches with fresh whole grapefruit, oranges, limes and chamomile, Tanqueray No. TEN is an exceptional taste experience. It is the only gin to be inducted into the San Francisco Spirit Awards Hall of Fame. Tanqueray No. TEN was the first ever gin to be distilled in small batches with fresh citrus fruit. This distillation takes place in a unique copper still called Tiny Ten. It produces a spirit known as the citrus heart which gives Tanqueray No. TEN its bright, elegant citrus taste Charles Tanqueray created the world's finest London Dry Gin in 1830 and it is made today to the same classic, timeless recipe. Tanqueray No. Ten was created with this heritage in mind and set the standard as one of the very first ultra-premium gins. Nose: Tanqueray No. 10 Gin is juniper led. It has bright lime zest with hints red grapefruit, just above a clean licorice and angelica note. It is best enjoyed with premium tonic water, ice and a wedge of pink grapefruit or with dry vermouth and a twist of pink grapefruit in a martini

Tanqueray No.10 has been a staple gin since 2000, it serves the purpose of being a trendsetter for what a premium gin should be like. Although, with the level of gins constantly improving, it’s questionable how long can Tanqueray No.10 keep this title. The second and final distillation takes place in the larger vintage 'Old Tom' No. 4 still. This is charged with the citrus heart previously distilled in Tiny Ten and wheat neutral spirit. Tanqueray's four traditional botanicals (juniper, coriander, angelica and liquorice) are added, along with camomile flowers and quartered fresh limes. Tanqueray No. 10 Gin launched in 2000. At the time, it was a bold departure from the Tanqueray Gin standard. At the time, Tanqueray Ten might have been considered contemporary in style. If you’ve been in almost any premium bar, you’ll of most likely seen a bottle of Tanqueray No.10 glistening in its glorious green bottle, sat on the bar shelves. This multi-award winning citrus based gin has been welcomed by the vast majority of gin lovers due to its depth of a fresh, clean flavour and sets the bar at what a premium gin should be. Tanqueray No.10 Gin Tasting Notes Compliment Tanqueray No. TEN and tonic with a pink grapefruit wedge to enhance its bright and complex citrus flavour.Tanqueray No. TEN is an exceptional taste experience with the aroma of citrus fruits and juniper and the flavour of citrus fruits and chamomile flowers. This gin may not have been possible in 1830 when Charles Tanqueray first developed the recipe for his gin. Fresh citrus, especially in the reliable quantities to make a gin like this would have either been quite expensive or just simply not available in 19th century London on a predictable basis.

At Drink Spirits we tend to cover many new releases, and unfortunately that means that some of the great classic spirits don’t have coverage. We felt the re-launch of Tanqueray Ten was a perfect opportunity to revisit both Tanqueray London Dry Gin and Tanqueray No. Ten Gin, discuss what makes them unique, and why you’d ask for one over the other. Tanqueray London Dry Gin Tanqueray No. TEN is the only gin in the prestigious globally-acclaimed San Francisco Spirits Hall of Fame. This award-winning gin is distilled in small batches with whole citrus fruits. Tanqueray No. TEN is distilled four times with the classic gin botanicals of refreshing juniper, peppery coriander, aromatic angelica and sweet liquorice. Fresh whole citrus fruits and chamomile flowers are then added to create an exceptional taste. Whole citrus fruits, limes, oranges and pink grapefruit are added with chamomile flowers to Tiny Ten Think of this gin as a tip of the hat to Charles Tanqueray, founder of the nearly two-century-old brand. It honors the man’s perfectionism, which is written all over his recipes and resulting work. Tanqueray didn’t just make spirits worth drinking, he made spirits worth savoring. TEN is one the late founder would be most proud of.

The whole citrus is distilled separately from the other botanicals. The two distillates are blended, diluted and bottled. Tasting Notes Tanqueray No. Ten Gin gets its name from being made in Tanqueray’s number ten still, also affectionately referred to as “Tiny Ten”. This small still was used as an experimental/trial run still at the distillery before becoming the key still for Tanqueray 10. There is a misconception that Tanqueray 10 gets its name from the number of botanicals in the mix; in fact, the recipe for Tanqueray 10 has all four of the base botanicals from Tanqueray London Dry: juniper, coriander, angelica, and licorice. Tanqueray 10 adds an additional four elements to the mix, including fresh white grapefruit, fresh lime, fresh orange, and camomile flowers for a total of 8 botanicals. One of the things which makes Tanqueray 10 unique is that it uses fresh whole citrus rather than dried citrus peels. Dried peels are used for the majority of gins on the market and very few actually use fresh fruit. Another important aspect of Tanqueray No. Ten's distillation is the low percentage of spirit retained as 'the cut' for the finished product. Typically (for example, with Special Dry) 90% of the total spirit is captured as the cut, implying that around 10% is discarded as 'heads' (the first spirit to run off the still) and 'tails' (the last spirit to run off the still). In contrast, during distillation of Tanqueray No. Ten, only around 60% of the spirit makes the cut: approximately 40% is discarded.

Best enjoyed with premium tonic water, plenty of ice and a wedge of pink grapefruit, or with dry vermouth and a twist of pink grapefruit in a perfect martini. There’s hardly a better time for TEN’s citric sizzle and garden-fresh flavors than spring and summer. This gin is a reflection of this revitalizing time of year, matching the floral fireworks of spring, and giving you the refreshing qualities you long for come summer. Tanqueray No. TEN Gin has won multiple awards including Double Gold in the gin category at the San Francisco Spirits Competition 2020
