Greer Garson gets equal if not top billing, but that's not right. Her role is not that big in this picture. In 2004, the same society decided to create a marker for Mrs. Chippy. The public donated funds to create a life-size bronze statue of Mrs. Chippy, and later the same year, around 100 people gathered round McNish’s grave and read words of tribute for both the carpenter and his cat.

Terence Rattigan's screenplay diverged significantly from Hilton's novella and the 1939 film adaptation. Firstly, the time frame of the story was advanced by several decades, starting in the 1920s, continuing through the Second World War, and ending in the late 1960s. Also, the musical does not show Chipping's first arrival at Brookfield School but starts with him already an established member of the teaching staff. Additionally, Rattigan made the character of Katherine Bridges a music hall soubrette and has her get killed by a V-1 flying bomb after being married to Chips for two decades, rather than dying in childbirth after a much shorter marriage. After the film's initial roadshow bookings, and before it was released in neighborhood theaters, many of the musical numbers were deleted, even though many of them were instrumental in explaining the characters' inner thoughts and emotions. The shortened version of the film was used for its initial television network broadcasts, but the complete version has been shown on TCM. Intervening years have brought a new appreciation for it, as well as John Williams' underscore and orchestrations. An aged teacher and former headmaster of a boarding school recalls his career and his personal life over the decades. Goodbye, Mr. Chips is a novella about the life of a school teacher, Mr. Chipping, written by English writer James Hilton and first published by Hodder & Stoughton in October 1934. It has been adapted into two feature films and two television presentations. A radio adaptation by Hallmark Playhouse starring Ronald Colman was broadcast on 16 September 1948. Jean Holloway wrote the adaptation, Dee Engelbach was the producer and director, and James Hilton was the host. [10] [11] A second version, told from the point of view of Mrs. Chips as portrayed by Deborah Kerr, was broadcast on 1 February 1951. Whitfield Connor was Mr. Chips, Leonard St. Clair wrote the adaptation, Bill Gay was the producer and director, and James Hilton was again the host. [12] [13]

Partridge, Eric (2002). Beale, Paul (ed.). A Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English (8ed.). Routledge. ISBN 978-0-415-29189-7.The setting for Goodbye, Mr. Chips is probably based on The Leys School, Cambridge, where James Hilton was a pupil (1915–18). Hilton is reported to have said that the inspiration for the protagonist, Mr. Chips, came from many sources, including his father, who was the headmaster of Chapel End School. Mr. Chips is also likely to have been based on W. H. Balgarnie, a master at The Leys (1900–30), who was in charge of the Leys Fortnightly (in which Hilton's first short stories and essays were published.) Over the years, old boys wrote to Geoffery Houghton, a master at The Leys and a historian of the school, confirming the links between Chipping and Balgarnie, who eventually died at Porthmadog at the age of 82. [4] Balgarnie had been linked with the school for 51 years and spent his last years in modest lodgings nearby. Like Mr. Chips, Balgarnie was a strict disciplinarian, but would also invite boys to visit him for tea and biscuits. Goodbye, Mr. Chips is a 1969 British musical film directed by Herbert Ross. The screenplay by Terence Rattigan is based on James Hilton's 1934 novella Goodbye, Mr. Chips, which was first adapted for the screen in 1939. Archer Winsten of the New York Post stated: "[It] has been produced in England in surroundings of inevitable authenticity and taste, with performers of extraordinary talent and range, and the results are here for all of us to share the sentimental warmth…that O'Toole performance is a gem, and Petula Clark knows exactly how to enhance its brilliance, and her own, most effectively." [7] A radio adaptation by the Lux Radio Theatre starring Laurence Olivier and Edna Best and presented by Cecil B. DeMille was first broadcast on 20 November 1939.
