Oraya of the Nightborn,” he murmured. “I give you my body. I give you my blood. I give you my soul. I give you my heart. From this night until the end of nights. From daybreak until our days are broken. Your soul is my soul. Your heart is my heart. Your pain is my pain. I bind myself to you.” I wanted it to all be a lie. But it was not a lie.” I'm hopeful that the magic system will be explored more thoroughly in the upcoming books, as I couldn't grasp why Oraya possesses some unexplained power as a human in a world full of vampires. Clearing up the mysteries surrounding her abilities would greatly enhance the overall reading experience and add depth to the story. Pacing - 3/5 i enjoy the main characters. i mostly like oraya, and i do like raihn and vincent and that sweet vampire girl whose name i've already forgotten (it starts with an m). I caught it in my fist, then unfolded it. The band of silk was nearly as long as I was tall, and a stunning deep violet with edges embroidered in gold.

The story is set in a world where vampires rule and humans are their prey. Oraya is the adopted human daughter of the Nightborn vampire king, and she has carved out a place for herself in this world by becoming a skilled warrior. However, she knows that she will never be truly accepted by the vampires, and she longs for a way to change her fate. An insignificant existence. Those words hit me unexpectedly hard. Because what existence was more insignificant than this? Living in constant fear, hobbled by my own blood and my own human weakness? I could never be anything this way, fighting so hard to survive that I could never do anything.

Read The Serpent and the Wings of Night (Crowns of Nyaxia Book 1)

oraya never felt really annoying to me, though my only qualm with her would be the same trap that many fall into in writing the strong, stubborn female characters archetype. there's a lot of talk to start about hardening your heart and never letting anyone in, etc. and that's a real thing of course, but that emotional indifference that gets written in to make a point in these characters isn't real because it disappears once she meets someone she fancies or who's nice to her. *cough cough* THE ENDING Oraya of the Nightborn,” he murmured. “I give you my body. I give you my blood. I give you my soul. I give you my heart. From this night until the end of nights. From daybreak until our days are broken. Your soul is my soul. Your heart is my heart. Your pain is my pain. I bind myself to you.”

we'll rip apart the worlds that subjugated both of us, and from the ashes we'll rebuild something new. and there is no one i would rather have beside me to do that with than you, oraya. no one."

I honestly didn’t know how the old bat had survived this long, but I was grateful for it. The humans I had seen in the slums this morning were nothing like me, and the vampires that surrounded me even less so. Only Ilana lingered somewhere in between, just like I did. Still, I didn’t know what I would do without either of them. I had no family here. Whoever was in that house with me when Vincent found me had been killed. If any distant relatives remained, they were trapped somewhere I couldn’t reach; at least, not until I won the Kejari. But I had Vincent, and I had Ilana, and they had become everything that I imagined a family to be, even if neither of them could understand every contradictory part of me. The descriptions were great and created a dark atmosphere. We could see how poorly humans are treated, how little they’re worth, and how hopeless some of them were. It’s not as bloody or gory as Empire of the Vampire, but there is a similarly dark and gloomy vibe to the book that I really enjoyed. The author has a gorgeous way to write her characters and the story, making it a dark and immersive journey. a Hiaj contestant tried to fly up above the carnage, only to immediately fall to the ground, wings shredded. A barrier. Wings or no, there was no avoiding the pit of death.” I let it spill out through my mouth and my eyes and my fingers and the tips of my hair. I let it erupt all the way to the sky— past the stars, the moon, reaching for Nyaxia herself.

I can admit that the plot was exhilarating and where the strongest focal point lied. I enjoyed the world-building and seeing the stakes that were present in this Hunger Games style battle they were participating in.

When I heard about this book being described as, “Hunger Games” but make it fantasy and with vampires, I knew I had to read this for myself! This also had some slow burn romance, alliances with a certain other competitor, danger, suspense, action, and a whole lot of blood as you’d except with a story revolves around vampires. Human or vampire, the rules of survival are the same: never trust, never yield, and always – always – guard your heart. Yes, I had no idea how Ilana had survived this long. Most voluntary human blood vendors—of which there were few—were killed within a year of their work. I knew too well exactly how little self-control vampires had when hunger was involved. You do not have to do this, my little serpent,” he said softly. “I realize only now that perhaps I never told you that.” Oraya (h) is a human girl who got adopted by Vincent, the Vampire King of House of Night, when she was eight years old. For full context there is also the House of Blood and House of Shadows, but they are irrelevant for now. Every 100 years the Kejari takes place, a tournament, where people all over Obitraes can participate. The contestants have to go trough five trials over the period of four months to win. The winner will get granted one wish by Godess Nyaxia the mother of all vampires. The House of Night is kinda divided into two rival vampire clans: the Hiaj and the Rishan vampires. Basically the whole story of The Serpent and the Wings of Night is that Oraya goes through the trials and has to ally with Raihn (H) to survive the tournament.
