The out takes too are interesting, although the version 1 songs more so than some of the 2nd versions. Disc five is a bonus disc containing all Time Out Of Mind related tracks that were previously available on The Bootleg Series Vol. In Der Spiegel, Max Dax gave a positive review of this album, writing that the new remix unleashes "the full musical power" of Dylan at this stage in his career. At a push, it could have been a 4 disc set without the live material and still been as good, that shows how good the unreleased tracks are.

The story began, appropriately enough, in a picaresque old playhouse Lanois dubbed the Teatro, filled with storybook touches—cob-webbed 16mm projectors, dusty mirror balls. It has breathed fresh life into what is one of my favourite latter day Dylan albums (the original is still a superb album).

Dylan, ever the role player, was inhabiting a persona, slipping into a black jacket and working the character for fresh angles. That’s one for Dylanologists and diehard fans to debate long into the small hours of one too many mornings but it certainly lets you hear and appreciate the songs and the instrumentation in a whole new light – just listen to the drums on the new mix of ‘Standing in the Doorway’, the organ on ‘Tryin’ to Get to Heaven’ and the dirty blues of ‘Cold Irons Bound’, which will rattle your bones even more than the original. But something different happens to “Not Dark Yet” and “Mississippi” when the players fiddle with them: They become different songs. For the brooding and bluesy Time Out of Mind – Dylan wrote the songs while snowbound on his Minnesota farm in the winter of 1996 – Daniel Lanois was at the controls. CD 2 and 3 – both made up of outtakes and alternate versions – are where things start to get really interesting. Disc 1 is a new mix of the original album, with a less gloomy feel, and bringing Dylan's feral growl right up front in your living room. The music came on like a big, black thunderhead, rolling forward with guitar echo merging into a clatter of drums.

The last disc you don't need if you have Tell Tale Signs, but I understand why it was included as it goes with the period, and they can charge more with another disc included. Shades of Howlin' Wolf indeed, and Not Dark Yet and Make You Feel My Love are major late career triumphs, in terms of performance and composition.Whatever else was happening in the studio, the musicians achieved a rambling, spacious, loose cohesion. The more we learn of Dylan's non-recorded history, the more complex he continues to become in our eyes - and the more we are able to better understand the multitudes of expressions he is able to present and represent. The making of this album was protracted, painful, and in all ways alive, and the album’s dour countenance was largely the product of theater and shadow.

Back cover variant to Fragments (Time Out Of Mind Sessions (1996-1997)), with three label logos instead of two. Disc four presents songs from Time Out of Mind in a series of spectacular live performances from 1998-2001. At the end of the track, which has a Claptonesque guitar break, you can hear Dylan say ‘Nice,’ someone else in the studio replies, ‘Yeah – that’s beautiful,’ and then there’s a round of applause. But it was the beginning of a split between the two that would define and nearly overwhelm the sessions. This is one of the most highly anticipated Bootleg Series releases and it follows the evolution of songs written for the album, from intimate early incarnations in the previously unreleased 1996 Teatro sessions through incandescent live renditions showcasing Dylan and his touring ensemble channeling the songs on-stage from 1998-2001. Guitar lines seem to be on the verge of wandering entirely out of sync with the drums only to fall in on beat with a satisfied breath. He reportedly felt haunted by Buddy Holly, and in tribute, he created his own ghostly version of the Crickets, pulling from his touring lineup, session-player royalty, and beyond.
