Orange: Troll Slayer Orange. This bright orange hue is perfect for adding pops of color to miniatures and can be used to create a bold contrast with the rich purple of Magos Purple. Contrast blues are some of the most saturated paints in the range, and Pylar Glacier exists to slot in between Aethermatic Blue and Talassar Blue . Launched in 2019, the Contrast range revolutionised miniatures painting. Now, the new colours span the entire spectrum, from eye-searing emeralds and yellows, to fiery reds and bold blues. We’re really spoilt for choice! To give us a hand exploring the new range, we asked Warhammer TV painting presenter Emma Robinson to provide us with ideas for using some of the new colours. The Warhammer 40,000 Starter Set is great for getting into the game – it includes all the miniatures from the Introductory Set, and adds a Captain in Terminator Armour and five Terminators on the Space Marine side, facing off against a Winged Tyranid Prime , Psychophage , three Von Ryan’s Leapers , and 10 more Termagants and a Ripper Swarm.

Kraken laid waste to Craftworld Iyanden, forcing its Farseers to rouse a massive number of Wraithguard and Wraithlords in its defence. It took the intervention of Prince Yriel – arriving suddenly from exile to cripple the Tyranid fleet – to turn the tide, and the narrow victory left the craftworld as a gaunt shadow of its former self. Emma: This colour is all about punch, it’s so bright and powerful. Doomfire Magenta straight out of the pot gives you a vivid pink for cloth or magic spells. It also suits Daughters of Khaine or Escher Gangers if you want some cool pink hair colours. I like to start with a nice dark purple – I’ve got a Vallejo Warlord Purple or a Xereus purple that work well. Generally, then I like to wash with a Red like the Carroburg Crimson – that nice mix of Purple guts and Red blood filling in the crevices. This works for all of these things, as it’s all kind of the same rotting innards, and the same undercoat helps tie them all together as coming from inside the carcass. I like to start dark because it would be dark and poorly lit inside the body. For muscles I like to go with the Screamer Pink. It’s a nice reddish purple that gives the idea of muscles without being too bright of a red that it would look like a fresh, bleeding wound. I like to think of these as rotting more than bleeding wounds, but hey I’m not your supervisor. Mutant Innards (Tongues, Tentacles, Exposed Muscle, Blood Vials): – Base with Daemonette Flesh. – Wash with Guilliman Blue (if available) or 50/50 Tallasar Blue/Contrast Medium – Carefully Highlight with Warpfiend Grey. – Edge Highlight with Slaanesh Grey.

Brandon Fox’s Method

A new alternative to Volupus Pink , Doomfire Magenta is lighter and brighter, opening up new avenues for painting pinkish tones. So there you have it, pro-tips from one of our pro-painters! That’s just 10 of the 25 new Contrast paints – we’ve already had ideas for coruscating bolts of energy with Mantis Warrior Green and some filthy underhive terrain with Garaghak’s Sewer. The possibilities are truly endless! In most situations, you’re going to want to choose a maniple that will let you swap out a Warhound for a Reaver so you can slap Motive Subreactors on it. Getting free boosts to your movement and maneuvering without having to push is great, and the downside is very manageable – if you’re taking repeated critical hits to your Titan’s legs, you’ve got bigger things to worry about than a point or two of heat. This is great for short- and mid-ranged Reavers, and pairs nicely with a melta cannon and your choice of melee weapon. Time to do tthe eyes with a spot of white. I also edge highlight the under-lids and smooth out the transitions on the upper lip. I do a final set of highlights on the bottom lip with a 50/50 mix of Emperor’s Children and Reaper Pure White to give it a glossy look. My boy has beautiful, kissable lips. I highlight the teeth with Rakarth Flesh and then Reaper Polished Bone. I’m going to do the same on the horns eventually. What might be confusing here is the uniform, where I start with Nuln to darken and desaturate it a bit before Druchii gets colour right. Highlights – Making the gribblies pop

The War Griffons favor an aggressive play style, which shows in their Legio and Personal Traits. Let’s explore how to make the most of these: Dark Imperium and Plague War by Guy Haley. These books focus on Guilliman’s battles against the Death Guard and Mortarion’s forces, but also feature several notable daemons, including Ku’Gath Plaguefather. Starting from a Grey Seer Spray undercoat as usual, I’ve painted the body with Contrast Nazdreg Yellow.Necrons: Necrons are a faction of ancient, robotic undead warriors who were once flesh and blood but have since been converted into living machines. Magos Purple can be used to paint their metallic armour to create a striking contrast against their other metallic colours. It can also be used to highlight their guns and tanks, adding a mystical and otherworldly feel to their machinery. Cult of the Warmason by CL Werner is primarily about the Sisters of Battle going up against a Genestealer Cults infestation on the shrine world of Lubentina. Genestealer Cults are some particularly interesting antagonists in the 40k fiction. They haven’t really had a chance to shine as protagonists in their own right, but show up in various roles in other books as threats of varying levels. I haven’t read these, but if you’re interested in reading more, I’ve generally heard good things about the following books:

Spray Wraithbone and let dry before spraying thinly with Army Painter Daemonic yellow, shade with Agrax in recessed areas only. Gold trim: Edge Highlight the pink with Citadel Fulgrim Pink, edge highlight the blue with Citadel Blue Horror. The Daemons of Slaanesh are twisted representations of desire and perversion, often intersexed and with lithe forms that move in beguiling ways. The daemons of Slaanesh thrive on temptation and obsession, feeding on mortals’ pride. What other features have I painted? WHO KNOWS! It probably doesn’t matter, and I definitely forgot how I did it. I probably shouldn’t have been drinking while I wrote this! But good life choices don’t lead you to Warhammer, so cheers! Hope you enjoyed, and maybe even learned something! I have also reviewed the Instant Colors from Scale 75, although I have not yet created a comparison chart for them:

Who are the Daemons of Nurgle?

There’s a lot of green in Warhammer, from Salamanders and Nurgle Daemons, to Orks and orruks! Gutrippa Flesh is here to help, slotting in between Militarum Green and Plaguebearer Flesh . If you need to shade the colourshift, be very ginger and only fill the recesses, as they can react unpredictably to washes/shades. Gryphonicus also allows you to replace a Warlord or Warhound in your maniple with a Reaver using your Mainstay of the Legion trait. When you do, you can give that Reaver a wargear upgrade depending on what sort of Titan it replaced. I hit the scales and the top of the banner in places with Runefang Steel so that when I paint the scales and fur with Contrast Shyish Purple there is a nice metallic sheen. I also hit the crab claw as well. Firstly, I want to prime everything with Citadel Spray Wraithbone, but to ensure I get the right colour and finish, I’ll then paint everything again with Wraithbone from the pot, which I’ll also need to tidy up any mistakes.
