I discovered this book at a time when I really needed to make improvements in my health and lifestyle habits. I have gained weight, I am not exercising as much as I once did and my sleep habits have been sporadic. One major problem with this book is that he cites a lot of good studies (that somehow I've already read about many times before) but then draws wildly unsupported conclusions from them. For example, he talks about a study that found a correlation between aggression and eating a lot of trans-fat (p. 108). Good, but he uses it to admonish readers to avoid fat. What? Maybe avoid trans fat, but all fat?! Just a few chapters ago, he was telling us to get a lot of omega-3s. Newsflash: that's also fat. This schedule is a popular one for parents who are working on sleep training because you can scale it up or down, depending on your baby’s age. This is a schedule that can work for newborns on up through older babies, which makes it adaptable (something that we busy, modern parents love, right?).

The Babywise method is quite simple. While there are always difficulties that come up because babies are humans and bring lots of variances to life, the basics are simple and easy to understand. You can get baby sleeping through the night! A power nap should be kept under 20 minutes, just like a caffeine-fueled one, so you avoid falling into a deep sleep and waking up groggier. Just because – some days there’s no rhyme or reason to it and your baby will just need to be held that bit more and fed that bit more. And still they may cry. In the early months it’s referred to as the “ witching hour” when babies cry a lot for no reason. It’s usually towards the end of the day and this phase ends when your baby is around four months. Even so, both of these obstacles can be managed and don’t discount breastfed babies from the sleep training benefits of eat play sleep. How do you eat play sleep if baby takes short naps? If you do start eat play sleep early, its best to keep it very flexible and accept that some days your schedule will look more like “eat sleep eat play eat sleep”.Your baby can feed for 20–30 minutes of their awake time and then you’ll have about 30 minutes left to separate their feed from sleep. Born with a rare genetic condition that predisposed him to cancerous growths, Rath himself is a living testimony to the value of these recommendations. “I act as if my life depends on each decision,” he writes. “Because it does.” As he notes, nearly 9 out of 10 deaths are attributable to four largely preventable diseases—cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and lung disease. Changing simple daily habits could enable many of us to live well into our 90’s. Newborn Phase: It can be really hard to follow eat, play, sleep when your baby is only one month month old or younger. You can try to create a little separation from baby’s feed and sleep by changing a diaper in between. Don’t stress it too much this early on though. As your baby gets closer to two months old, she will start to “wake up” a little and you can work on eat, play, sleep then. Helps ensure babies get a full feed. Babies who frequently nod off in the middle of a feed may wake early due to hunger. If they feed as soon as they wake, they can finish a full feed and last a full eat play sleep cycle.

I have often seen the question of “Why do the eat, wake, sleep pattern for Babywise?” People wonder why it is so important to follow this cycle. Why can’t you feed baby right before a nap? Wouldn’t that get baby sleeping longer for the nap if baby had a full tummy right before nap time rather than right after nap? Repeating this simple pattern throughout the day helps form the healthy sleep habits that make for a full night of rest for all involved. Is the Eat Play Sleep Routine Right for Your Baby? First of all it’s important not to let this schedule rule your life. It’s only worth doing if it makes your life easier! For the play portion, you can try diaper changes, changing clothes, tummy time, the swing/bouncer positioned in front of a sliding glass door (natural light source), Mommy playdates or short errands outside of the home.

The routine starts with eat as soon as your baby wakes from a nap or in the morning. This happens right when your baby is wide awake so that they take a full feed.

It’s common and normal for newborns to fall asleep during the feed, because newborns are sleepy most of the time.Tom Rath ...
