The Top 100 Albums of the Decade". Record Mirror. London, England: United Newspapers. 25 November 1989. pp.28–29. Upstairs at Eric's was Yazoo's debut, and Moyet's vocals aside, it was pretty standard synth pop stuff. "Don't Go" and "Only You" were the big hits - both hitting the top 3 and cementing the band's reputation here in the UK. Sure, they both sound pure 1982, but they're still strong pop singles regardless, and Moyet's voice lift both above other synth-heavy stuff that was charting at the time. Contrasting the band's big hits, "I Before E Except After C" is a real love it / hate it number, and I'm afraid the experimental cut-up vocal stuff just doesn't work for me. In fact, outside of the two big hits, "Goodbye Seventies", "Winter Kills", and Moyet's voice, there's not a lot on Upstairs at Eric's that would encourage me to return to it on even an irregular basis. Compilation albums [ edit ] List of compilation albums, with selected chart positions and certifications The two big hits though. Wow. Yeah, they were synth pop done right. It's no accident that Vince Clarke is considered one of the architects of the era, as both "Only You" and "Don't Go", contrasting in pace as they are, are laden with pop hooks and across the two Moyet gives two very different performances demonstrating her vocal and emotional range - stirring stuff. Trouble is, most of the rest of Upstairs at Eric's just doesn't do much for me, I mean, apparently "Situation" was released as a single, but there's no obvious reason why, and it isn't a patch on the album's two fried gold classics. Upstairs at Eric's was placed at number 6 on the NME critics' list of albums of the year for 1982, while "Only You" was listed as the number 7 single and "Don't Go" as the number 14 single that same year. [16] The album was also named as one of Sounds magazine's top twenty albums of 1982. [17] Moyet later described how her song "Goodbye 70's" had been inspired by her disillusionment with how the late-1970s punk scene had turned out, saying, "'Goodbye 70's' is about punk and not caring how you were dressed, and then I discovered that so many of my friends that I'd thought it all really meant something to just saw it as another trend... That's what 'Goodbye 70's' was all about, about how sour the whole thing became." [7] Artwork [ edit ]

Ok, I didn’t think so. Sadly, I was not privy to early second-British-invasion acts like Yazoo until long after the fact; sure, I heard “Situation” here and there, and wondered who it was. And I got myself a copy of Alison Moyet’s 1984 single “Invisible.” In 1982, we already knew about Vince Clarke. He'd been in Depeche Mode when they'd released the singles 'New Life' and 'Just Can't Get Enough'. The tough Human League lads at school thought Depeche Mode were too weedy but I (again) quietly liked them. In November 1981, Clarke had quit the Mode citing a combination of touring boredom and a disdain for pop stars' goldfish bowl existence. However, he'd written a new song and wanted to find someone to record the vocals. You and Me Both: "RPM 100 Albums". RPM. Vol.39, no.4. 24 September 1983. p.8. SPAR" etching and the "-SP#" at the end of the matrix number (# being a number) indicates that the B Side was sourced from metal parts (metal mother disc) created at Specialty Records Corporation for use at Allied Record Company. Review Summary: Catchy and concise yet innovating and influential, it's quite possibly Vince Clarke's finest hour.
