One of the highlights of this book is its exploration of Lydia Martin's character. Throughout the series, Lydia has been portrayed as a popular and confident girl, but in On Fire, we see a more vulnerable side to her as she struggles to come to terms with her latent powers. Holder does an excellent job of portraying Lydia's fear and confusion, but also her strength and determination to overcome her struggles. Seeing Lydia's development in this book was undoubtedly one of the things that made it stand out.

I also liked the portrayal of Derek as nearly as clueless as Scott, even though I think he'd have been a little smarter than that, even as a sixteen year old. The fact that Kate didn't use Derek for access to the wiring of his house to fake an ignition bothered me, though. As well as the fact that Holder doesn't bother to name Kate's henchmen other than Mr. Harris despite the fact that they are clearly named and murdered on the show.
