This text has already served as a springboard for discussion and will no doubt continue to help me think productively about friendship and the role it plays in my life. There are, of course, those who laud the increase in therapy-speak as a sign of our emancipation from the shackles of Victorian repression; when it comes to our emotions, we’ve finally learnt, as the idiom goes, that it’s better out than in. In Friendaholic: Confessions of a Friendship Addict, Elizabeth Day embarks on a journey to answer these questions. There are sprinklings of unconnected “Friendship Tapes” from individuals about what friendship means to them that break up each chapter beautifully. Don’t miss the opportunity to bring your own best friends or newest acquaintances along to this unforgettable evening of intimate, enlightening, and important conversation. You won’t be able to bring any bags over 40 x 25 x 25cm into the auditorium of the Royal Festival Hall or the Queen Elizabeth Hall, or into the Hayward Gallery, so please leave large bags at home. Though it wasn't revolutionary, Day guides you through a meditation on your experience through the motions of hers and I did find that valuable. But in adulthood she slowly realised that it was often to the detriment of her own boundaries and mental health. She is the creator of the award-winning podcast How To Fail With Elizabeth Day, as well as co-host of Best Friend Therapy. Or that it sets up an impossible series of false expectations about what we are due from this world.

Friendship, particularly from a woman's perspective, is a fascinating relationship dynamic and as many of us have, I've been through a journey as I get older on how I value or measure friendship. I felt this acutely in those moments when Day dishes on ex-friends, saying of one: “She told me she was frustrated and bored in her relationship, and was guiltily nurturing a workplace crush on a younger colleague. From the outset, Day emphasises the lack of language and protocols around friendship, in comparison romantic love, stating that as a society, there is a tendency to elevate romantic love.
