Description

Greene, Bob (November 27, 1990). "Saying so long to Mr. Kong". Chicago Tribune. Archived from the original on December 21, 2016 . Retrieved December 24, 2016. The towering new 4K restoration of the 1976 event movie reimagining of the classic monster story, KING KONG. The rest of the features are spread across the Blu-ray version of the film and a separate Bonus Feature disc - and there are dozens of them, amounting to more than 13 hours of extra stuff when all’s said and done. Don’t let these little issues put you off, though. For the vast majority of the time, both the extended and original King Kong cuts enjoy a reference-grade picture - especially where HDR and wide color gamut is concerned - that rewrites expectations of what 4K Blu-ray can do with a 2K master.

King Kong is well known for its groundbreaking use of special effects, such as stop-motion animation, matte painting, rear projection and miniatures, all of which were conceived decades before the digital age. [13] As soon as they arrive, they realise that this island is not inhabited, a hude wall rears before them and the locals are offering some sort of sacrifice to a giant gorilla. As soon as they see the blonde Dwan they decide she would be perfect for the job. She is taken and soon calms the angry beast.

This 2022 restoration is presented by STUDIOCANAL and Paramount Pictures. The 35mm original negative was scanned in 4K and colour graded by Paramount. The restoration and mastering was then carried out at L'Immagine Ritrovata, under the supervision of STUDIOCANAL. The purpose of this restoration was to give a new lease of life to the film for audiences to enjoy on the big screen, and eventually on the smaller screen. A 4K DCP was created, as well as a Dolby Vision master, to enhance the sharpness and brightness in cinemas which is not usually possible with a standard HD master. In addition there is a new, improved and cleaned up 5.1 audio. Key kit used for this test: Samsung UN65KS9800 TV, Oppo 203 4K Blu-ray player, Panasonic UB900 4K Blu-ray player This new StudioCanal release drops some of the special features from Shout’s 2021 Blu-ray release and doesn’t add anything new. That being said, the inclusion of the Extended TV Cut in 4K with Dolby Vision is worth much more than the features dropped, I think.

King Kong (1976) set for 4K remastered re-issue release from STUDIOCANAL (New Release Date)

In terms of audio, the Blu-ray’s lossless DTS-HD Master Audio mix was already terrific but it’s been upgraded on the 4K disc to object-based DTS:X. It’s an amazing presentation, with strong dynamics, aggressive panning activity, extremely deep low end, fully-enveloping ambience, powerful score reproduction, and crystal-clear dialogue. The DTS:X also opens up the soundstage a bit, making the mix a bit more spacious and natural sounding – it’s a slightly more immersive experience. Additional audio options on the 4K disc include English DTS Headphone:X (which simulates theater-like surround sound over a regular pair of headphones), as well as standard 5.1 DTS mixes in French, Spanish, Japanese, and Portuguese. Available subtitles include English SDH, French, Spanish, Japanese, and Portuguese.
