The earliest English example we could find, from a 1709 book written by a London midwife, refers to “men of a certain age.” The phrase was repopularized in a 1979 book by the psychotherapist Lillian B. Rubin, "Women of a Certain Age: The Midlife Search for Self," in which midlife spanned 35 to 54. There’s so much for women to be angry about … Discrimination because of your sexuality, race, ability, gender. The treatment of asylum seekers. Climate change. The inaction of politicians on any number of issues. People refusing to hear you or take you seriously because you’re a woman.

It may perhaps be granted that men of a certain age, men past the slippery season of youth, may claim the benefit of exemption from impressions of sensuality, by objects to which custom has familiarized them.” Women have been taught from a young age that expressing anger is ‘unbecoming’ and makes them seem ‘hysterical’. Meanwhile, boys in the playground can actively show rage and there are rarely repercussions. This translates into more gendered behaviour later in life, where there is a knee-jerk reaction to women showing anger in professional life and beyond. What I really enjoyed about this collection is that it shows the many facets of this translation, and how it can affect all walks of life. I refer to Lousie Hay's "Shoulding Exercise" which is in her book You Can Heal Your Life https://www.louisehay.com/One of the most profound and difficult times in my life came when we found out my husband had a terminal disease. The devastation would be an understatement he had Parkinson and Lewy body dementia. Writing as Georgie she has produced a witty portrayal of the menopause, motherhood and marriage. The moral of this delightful read, set in the beautiful countryside surrounding Stratford upon Avon, is to make sure you shake your life up and don't on any account let the menopause drag you down.

So too the news that not enough had changed since Clark first calculated that the average age of nominees for Bafta’s leading television actress award, had plunged from 52 to 32 years between 2000 and 2021. (For men the average only dipped from 48 to 45 years.) The OED’s earliest example of the usage is from a 1754 issue of the Connoisseur, a short-lived satirical weekly in London, edited by the essayists George Colman and Bonnell Thornton: The appetites toward the preservation of the body are excited in every stage of life by the uneasy sensations of hunger, thirst, and cold. The desire of offspring at a certain age, and parental affection is also universal ; and in consequence of them the like affections toward kinsmen. But after struggling to raise media interest, she was ready to give up. Friends urged her to keep going, which was just as well. Last month, her campaign suddenly took off — on television, radio and in newspapers. Although we may not all experience such menopausal adventures as the protagonist Eliza, many readers will certainly identify with the real life scenarios, the marital ups and downs, teenage angst, autism and the death of a much loved family pet.Through Women of a Certain Stage, Lauren aims to empower individuals by providing current information, tools, and techniques to successfully manage menopause. In addition to our customised in-house training and consultancy services, we offer a range of certification programmes through our public curriculum.
