Description

For fans of Educated, this is the remarkable true story of a girl from a Romani ghetto in search of a better life. And, so you would think her life improved. Not so much. In some ways, perhaps, but her story is a vivid illustration of the immigrant experience. As I felt after reading American Dirt, I once again feel that immigrants should be venerated for all that they endure in their effort for a better life.

Hoci sem tam skončila v deji do minulosti, vždy to malo logiku a dokázala vo mne vyvolat rôzne emócie. This programme contains descriptions of child exploitation and sexual violence which some listeners may find distressing. A scintillating, devastating memoir, and a fiercely witty and unabashed tribute to the toughness of the human spirit.'

Eliska Tanzer's memoir of her life growing up as one of an outcast people in Slovakia is a stark reminder of how unequal opportunities can be, not only on a global scale but within countries and then towns. Ancestry or skin colour should not be the factors which decide a person's future practically from their birth, but all too often this is still the case and, other than for a quirk of fate, I would never have read Tanzer's searingly honest memoir because she would never have had the opportunity to write it. She quite possibly would not even have been able to write. Best Books Set in the 1920s — from Stories That Shimmer with Champagne and Social Change, to Rip-roaring Reads Covering Crime, Colonialism and Beyond. This was one of the first books I choose from NetGalley, and I chose it because the cover seemed interesting. As the deadline approached, I sort of lost interest. Part of it was how obscure it is; this is a book that isn’t even being published in North America (based on the available information). However, I said I would review it, so I made a point to at least try. I am beyond happy that I did. I loved pretty much everything about this book. Born into a family of prostitutes in a Romani ghetto, she grows up in squalid conditions, with no running water, no education, and no future.

But Eliska is given a way out after her mother scrapes together the money to smuggle her out of the country to a new life. Arriving in England in a washing-machine box, she thinks she has made it. But as a young girl alone in a new country, Eliska soon sees her dream turn into a nightmare when she is forced to live and work under unbearable abuse as she tries to forge her way alone. But Eliska was given a way out. Slung out of Hoe School and shipped to England in a washing machine box, she thought she had made it. But her dream soon turned into a nightmare. S napätím som čítala o Eliškinom nepriaznivom osude, o tŕnistých cestách, ktorými musela, ako dieťa prejsť a hlavne o sile odhodlania a vytrvalosti. To Westerners, being Romani means being wild, romantic and free. To Eliska Tanzer, it means being rented out to dance for older men. It means living without running water. It means not being allowed a job or an education. It means being stuffed into a bare room with all your aunts and cousins, fighting over the thin, stained blanket the way you fight over the last piece of half-mouldy bread. It means joining the family prostitution ring when you’re still a child.
