Description

She was generous with her words and time when signing afterwards and softly spoken but set in her opinions. She still has a great style, but this strangely old-school "household almanac" is only for a very, very specific audience.

Had it leaned more into the personal stories and their relevance to the topics this could have been so much better. I've found it really hard to put down, much like Sali's previous books, as it's so comforting, honest and I've learned tips for things I didn't even know I needed tips for. However, this was a very enjoyable read, I like Sali's style and all her Pool Columns, some of which are repeated here. Here she expands the brief and gives you tips on everything from how to get divorced without going to prison to how to hang a pair of curtains.

I started this book because I remember really enjoying Sali's informed yet frank style of advice in her book "Honestly Perfect. This book opens with Home tips, but you can get these elsewhere from experts online, or perhaps you have copies of Laura de Barra's books already. The interesting thing is that occasionally we see flashes of vulnerability and signs of personal growth (when Sali talks about revisiting her childhood home, her father's hoarding, and her own parenting). I would throughly recommend getting this book for anyone above 25, it’s filled with life lessons, tips, and caring advise from Sali.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. The content could have been so easily contained in a short pamphlet - Wear sunscreen, don't be a slave to fashion and this is how you cook pasta. A lot of the guides needed beefing up - helping grieving friends needs more than a few paragraphs and the lists of what you need in a kitchen/etc.

Sali Hughes is a journalist, broadcaster, Guardian columnist and founder of the award-winning salihughesbeauty. I did enjoy the personal stories that were shared, such as finding out about her childhood, her father's hoarding and personal life, but these were far and few between. While not absolutely everything applies (as is rarely the case to everyone) I found it fascinating and there are loads of tips to pass on. There are far too few handy hints and far too much of her personal anecdotes which add little to the content. I did frequently think what a lovely gift it would make to someone in their late teens or early 20s leaving home for the first time, but then wondered if said someone wouldn't be more likely to get their life advice from Tiktok and Youtube.

Women and men of Sali's age know all (or at least most of this stuff), and young men and women simply don't seek advice from a book of this nature.
