Description

Should maceration or rash occur, remove the dressing and allow the skin to recover until the symptom has disappeared, then continue treatment gradually increasing therapy time. If the symptom persists, discontinue use and consult a physician for advice.

Do not use the gel sheet on open wounds. If you develop a wound in your scar, remove the gel sheet and keep it safe until the wound is healed. Mepiform can soften, fade and flatten your scar and improve the appearance of your skin. However, some evidence of the scar may remain. Remove the release film and apply Mepiform over the scar. Avoid stretching when applying over joints. Mepiform ®, a soft silicone scar dressing with Safetac ®, has been evaluated in a number of studies for the treatment of hypertrophic scars: Mepiform is a thin, discreet and flexible dressing consisting of a laminate (polyurethane and nonwoven) covered with a soft silicone gel. When applying Mepiform, make sure the area is dry. When used together with ointment or cream, ensure the dressing covers an area beyond the cream. Safetac is a soft silicone adhesive technology. Mepiform dressings adhere gently to the skin and protect the scar tissue. The Safetac technology allows the dressing to be changed without causing pain. It can be lifted from the skin without losing its adhesive properties, allowing for reapplication if inspection is needed. Topical silicone gel sheeting has been used successfully for over 20 years to treat hypertrophic and keloid scars and is supported by numerous clinical evaluations and international clinical recommendations on scar management . Mepiform is designed for the management of old and new hypertrophic scars, keloids and closed wounds which may prevent the formation of hypertrophic and keloids scars.

Silicone gel dressings have empirically been shown to have positive impact on red and raised scars (hypertrophic scars and keloids). However, the mechanism of action for silicone on scars is not yet completely understood. Mepiform is designed to flatten, soften and fade red and raised scars, thus making them less visible The Cheyne Child Development Service - School age Autism (ASD) Assessment Pathway Parent Information

Saulsberry et al report on four cases where Mepiform was utilised for scar management following surgical incisions and burns. Throughout the treatment period (at least six months for each patient), the dressing maintained a low profile and remained in situ under a compression garment without edge roll or interfering with joint mobility. The scars, originally hyperpigmented, returned to a more normal pigmentation with a smoother and more flexible nature. The length of treatment time will differ from person to person and depends on the condition and the age of the scar. First results may be seen already after 2 months, however the improvement of the scar may continue for up to a year under treatment.

Mepiform is designed for the management of hypertrophic and keloid scars. It can also be used as a prophylactic therapy on closed wounds for prevention of hypertrophic or keloid scarring. In Majan’s randomised controlled trial of 11 patients with postoperative hypertrophic scars, participants were randomly allocated to treatment with Mepiform or ‘left alone’. Patients treated with Mepiform showed greater and more rapid improvements than those in the non-treatment group, as measured by the Vancouver Scar Scale. Commenting on their results, the author conclude that, as Mepiform is self-adhesive and its use limits damage to the stratum corneum on removal, it gives it an added value compared with non-adhesive silicone gel dressings. Under normal conditions of use a new dressing should be applied every 3 - 7 days or when the adherent properties of the dressing are no longer sufficient. It may take from 3 months to a year or more to improve and old scar depending upon the condition of the scar tissueAs a preventative treatment Mepiform may be used for at least 1 month. The effectiveness of the treatment is dependent on the wearing time. Mepiform is designed to be worn 24 hours per day for optimum results. Since Mepiform is thin, comfortable and conforms well to body contours it can be worn during most daily activities. A silicone gel sheet is a soft, flexible, self-adhesive dressing that is applied over scars. It contains silicone. Silicone can help to improve the colour, height and texture of a scar. Silicone can also relieve itching and discomfort caused by a scar. How does it work? area to be treated by at least one centimetres but larger dressings may be cut to size or shape before removal of the protective film if required. Hypertrophic scars are seen in approximately 50 percent of wounds after surgery and more than 50 percent of healed deep burns. They are generally red, raised and itchy and appear within the boundaries of wounds.

Mepiform should optimally be worn for 24 hours a day. Remove the dressing once per day for inspection and washing of the skin. The dressing can then be reapplied. Mepiform should under normal conditions be changed every 3 - 7 days or when the adherent properties of the dressing are no longer sufficient. Scars are disfiguring and can interfere with the normal functioning of the skin and other organs affected. They are more likely to form where the primary cause of the scar persists, where there is continued inflammation and when the scar takes a long time to heal . Continued fibrosis in the skin leads to scarring and, potentially, disfigurement as a result of progressive deposition of matrix.Build up your skin tolerance. Wear the sheet for 4 hours daily for two days. Then increase to time advised by your therapist. Safetac is a patented soft silicone adhesive technology. Dressings with Safetac technology are atraumatic upon removal. These dressings minimise trauma to the wound and the surrounding skin, which minimises pain to the patient. The risk of maceration is minimised by sealing the wound margins. You can use more than one dressing and join pieces together edge to edge. You can also cut the dressing to the size and form desired. It is not clear exactly how Silicone works on a scar. Some research suggests that the silicone creates a protective barrier over the scar which allows it to mature while helping to prevent production of excess scar tissue. The silicone layer also assists with hydration of the scar. Where can I get silicone gel sheets?
