Description

Gillian Rose has provided a welcome overview of the state of the field. Visual Methodologies succeeds both as an introductory text, certain to be widely adopted in the classroom, and as a sophisticated refresher course for those who have followed the rapid maturation of this remarkable interdisciplinary discourse Rose's current research interests lie broadly within the field of visual culture. She is interested in the ways social subjectivities and relations are pictured or made invisible in a range of media, and how those processes are embedded in power relations. She also has long-standing interest in feminist film theory and in Michel Foucault's and feminist accounts of photography in particular. This work has formed a crucial link between feminist geography and geography of media and communication. In recent years, she has written three books that have proven less controversial: Visual Methodologies: An Introduction to Interpreting Visual Materials (2001), Deterritorialisations: Revisioning Landscape and Politics (2003), and Doing Family Photography: The Domestic, The Public and The Politics of Sentiment (Ashgate, 2012). Gillian's first book was Feminism and Geography: The Limits to Geographical Knowledge (1993). In it, she explored questions surrounding the politics of knowledge production in relation to the discipline of geography itself. The book is a poststructural critique of masculinist geographies and made a significant contribution to the emergence of feminist geography. Gillian is a cultural geographer. Although her empirical research interests have shifted over time, a central theme has been the techniques and politics of knowledge production about places. Her longest-running project is the book Visual Methodologies: An Introduction to Researching with Visual Materials; its fifth edition was published in 2022. Rose, G., Degen, M. and Melhuish, C.
