It’s just as good as an air purifier too, though its CADR rating is slightly below that of the purifier-only Pro P2. In tests, it took PM2.5 levels from a maximum 411 micrograms per square metre to 25 in 135 seconds, bringing it down to double figures in just over a minute. Again like the Pro P2, it’s quiet, with the noise barely noticeable at the lowest speed in purifier mode. Left on Smart mode, with the front-facing display turned off, all but the lightest sleepers should be able to sleep through. Unlike dust and pollen, listing all the chemicals in smoke would be almost impossible, but the rule of thumb is that no smoke should be inhaled and all particles can be harmful. Is smoke harmful? What about a carry handle? These are handy if you need to move it from room to room. Wheels, a compact design and a low weight won’t go amiss here, either.

Smoke is generally harmful to inhale and can lead to coughing and wheezing in the short term and chronic problems with over exposure – this is certainly true of second-hand cigarette smoke. The H-PURIFIER range of air purifiers have a uniquely treated HEPA (H13) filter which not only captures the pollens but actively neutralises them*, making them harmless to allergy sufferers and preventing the allergic reaction (allergic rhinitis). Speed settings. Most air purifiers have a choice of speeds so you can keep it lower for sleeping and turn it up when the pollen count is high. A night mode can also help if you want a quiet setting and dimmer lights while you sleep, although we found this doesn’t always work as well as you’d hope.As you’d expect from something carrying the Hoover logo, this appliance seems to be pretty good at purifying air, based on our experience with it over a few weeks. It’s also very capable at covering sizeable areas too, with suitability for rooms up to 100m2, which will suit most household needs we think. Allergies and symptoms relating to the ingestion of pollen are caused by the immune system when they mistake the harmless pollen to be an intruder. As the immune system reacts to defend itself it can lead to sneezing, a stuffy nose and watery eyes and general feeling of discomfort. I don’t know why I’d never considered an air purifier before to help control my allergies. I guess they have just been part of my life for so long that I’ve learnt to cope with them and never really considered that I could do anything to improve the situation. It was easy to unbox and set up. It was already fully assembled and after plugging it in, it simply required the humidifier water tank to be filled and the diffuser bottle to be inserted. The LED light ring on the appliance cycled through red, orange, yellow and green as it assessed the air quality and finally settled on green. It was reassuring to know that the air quality was still good in our home. (We’d previously had a professional indoor air quality test conducted). WiFi enabled air purifier

However, the air purifier does more than just pull in smoke, it will draw in dust, pollens, bacteria and other harmful particles at the same time. When the opportunity came up to work with Hoover to test an air purifier, I wasn’t overly confident that it would make a difference but I was definitely intrigued and interested to try it out. I mean if it could alleviate my allergy symptoms that would make a huge difference to my life. Air purifiers use different kinds of filters to do their job – usually, a large, washable, reusable pre-filter to collect bigger particles, plus a finer filter, which is usually a disposable high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter. The length of time this lasts varies, but on average expect it to need replacing every six months (or fewer if you use the machine less). It’s the HEPA filter that catches all the tiny airborne nasties, and these are capable of catching particles as small as 0.3 microns, which is more than three times smaller than a cigarette smoke particle. The animal allergies are the worst as the symptoms are actually life-threatening. But if I simply avoid animals there’s no problem. If I go to someone’s home who has pets, I need to remember to take antihistamines beforehand and to take my inhaler with me. So this allergy is reasonably easy to control. At just 18dB on its lowest setting, the Blue 3210 is technically quieter than a whisper. It’s certainly the quietest we tested as well as one of the most efficient, using about as much energy as an LED lightbulb.

Which H-PURIFIER is best for smoke?

Matt Thomas, Lead Small Electricals Buyer at John Lewis, has noted a marked increase in air purifier sales. “Typically, we’ve seen families with young children, new parents and families where there’s a history of allergies or respiratory conditions being the early adopters,” he says. The best air purifiers for mid-sized rooms 1. Sharp UA-HD50U-L: Best purifier and humidifier for mid-sized rooms After giving up on trying to get the air purifier connected, we focussed on just the unit as a standalone appliance without the app. We started it off with it in the living room on the automatic setting. The Air Purifier 700 has a Multi Sensor system comprised of a set ofintelligent sensors that continuously detect and monitor the quality of the air inside. These sensors continuously analyse the air quality in terms of PM 2.5, PM 10 and Gas (VOC).

There is also an active carbon layer that traps and absorbs gaseous pollutants (VOC, NO2), fumes, cigarette smoke and odours. Noise is another factor – you don’t want to replace one irritation (allergies) with another (the sound of a jet plane in your room). For many, the hum is something that doesn’t bother them, but some purifiers can get very noisy. It’s also worth remembering that, while some machines are quiet on their lowest setting (where they’re often at their least effective), they might be loud on the fastest (where they’re working at their best). We’ve ended up placing it in the hallway of our flat as this is the most central position where every room is no more than two metres away. From this position, the air purifier can easily detect all triggers that may activate the device. There is also uninhibited airflow around the device which enables the 360° Air Flow system and guarantees fast and efficient air purification. If you suffer from respiratory conditions like asthma or you have young children in the household, you might be particularly concerned. Dr Jo Barnes is Associate Professor of Clean Air at the University of West England’s Air Quality Management Resource Centre. She explains that very fine particulate matter in the air at home can not only damage your lungs, but organs throughout the body. The CADR aims to provide an objective measure of the effectiveness of a portable air purifier at dealing with different types of allergens. A purifier with a score of 250 for dust particles is as effective as adding 250 cubic feet of clean air per minute. Buyers should focus on the results of the specific pollutant they’re aiming to eradicate, whether that’s pollen, smoke or dust, and many manufacturers will supply CADR figures for the most common.

Efficient 3-Stage Filter System】 The first defence primary filter can filter dust, pet fur, lint; The second defence H13 HEPA filter trap airborne particles such as pollen, pet dander. The last defence activated carbon stage can effectively filter out unpleasant smoke and odours. 3-Stage defences protect your each breathes Here’s a list of the most common pollens in the UK which are more prevalent in the spring and summer and the most likely to cause allergies. It’s as a purifier that we’re recommending it here. The Purifier Cool Autoreact offers an extremely high level of filtration, with a fully-sealed H13 HEPA system rated to remove 99.95 percent of particles down to 0.1 microns and a carbon filter to remove odours, harmful gases and VOCs (volatile organic compounds – see FAQ section below). Spending more will get you something quieter with more power, but this is a decent little purifier for a small lounge, home office or bedroom if you’re working on a similarly sized budget. Great-value option】 Save energy with the air purifier's DC motor, which uses little energy to operate and saves money, even while running on the highest fan speed 24/7. And Core 300S won the Red Dot 2021 and Energy Star Verified

It’s a bit of a surprise when the system starts informing you that it’s detecting VOC (volatile organic compounds) or GAS mind you, but the real-time monitoring is effective and very responsive. The machine can not only keep tabs on those gasses or VOCs - handy if you live next to a busy road for example - but also the temperature and humidity.

How can an air purifier help with smoke?

Neither myself nor my husband smoke so we weren’t able to test whether the air purifier was able to successfully remove the smell of cigarette smoke. Are air purifiers worth it? Considering an average UK living room of 20m2 (with a height of 2.4m), based on LABC UK data and a CADR of 330. It’s one of the best-looking air purifiers you can get, but the real attraction is the lifespan of the German-made filters, which can last up to 12 months depending on use. The device reminds you when they’re in need of replacement. Another nice feature is an intelligent auto mode, which senses how much pollution is in the room and chooses appropriately from its five speed settings. Very little compared to other household appliances. Electric heaters and dehumidifiers tend to draw 1,000 to 2,000 Watts but household air purifiers draw just 20-30W, costing you around 2p per hour at current (June 2023) prices. However, these can rise steeply with extra functions: “Those that have heating, cooling and dehumidifier functions will use much more energy than a standard filter unit,” Matt Thomas says. Otherwise, this has the same advantages as the smaller version: effective three-stage filtering, a built-in humidifying function and Sharp’s Plasmacluster ion technology, which – while it sounds like a weapon from a Halo game – works to kill odours, bacteria and mould. While the Vax PureAir 300 gives you even more airflow and covers larger rooms for less, the Sharp hits a sweet spot for price, performance and features, making it a great mid-range purifier for mid-sized rooms.
