But where some versions of events overlap, aligning perfectly with one another, others stand in stark contrast, giving rise to troubling inconsistencies.

In today's society I doubt that Knox expected many people to get through the whole book without googling Zoe Nolan but it's testament to my own patience that I was a few chapters in before I did so and to Knox's skill that, even when I didn't immediately find information about Nolan, I wasn't completely convinced she'd never existed. Knox does a great job of holding up a mirror to human nature, not just in building a believable portrait of a missing girl and those she's left behind, but also in understanding and encouraging a reader's capacity to get to a point where we're actively wishing Zoe into existence just so the sad story of yet another missing girl can be true. Dark, right!? However I cannot honestly say that I got as much pleasure as I was hoping for reading this. I came to this as a fan of Joe Knox's Aidan Waits stories. However here the narrative style of hopping between contributors was not one I really liked. I also felt that the first third at least was fairly slow. Certainly the pace and tension improved significantly from around halfway through. Zoe Nolan disappeared in the winter of 2011 from Manchester University, where she was a first year student. Years later, writer Evelyn Mitchell decides to write a book about the strange disappearance of the woman who was never seen again. She interviews friends and family, hoping to dig deeper into the life of Zoe, in hopes of finding out what happened to her.In a sense I thought this was quite a good story looking at it as a whole. There are numerous twists and turns in the narrative as aspects of Zoe and her friends' lives are gradually revealed. I confess that I thought I knew the answer to this but I was wrong! From that view point I think this is a good story. Knox starts off by telling us how he met a woman named Evelyn Mitchell at one of his book signings. Also an author, Evie gently dismisses him as another attention-seeking writer whose books focus more on the salacious details of the killers than the victims. I would recommend this book to others. I thought that the mystery of what happened to Zoe was very intriguing and I loved that the story kept me guessing until the very end. I would definitely read more of this author’s work in the future. It took some time for me to understand how this book worked. I was initially confused with the author inserting himself in the story but when I finally got it, it was brilliant! The ending was terrific. As it approached, I found myself compelled to keep listening. I just wanted to know who was responsible for Zoe Nolan’s disappearance. Seven years after her disappearance, struggling writer Evelyn Mitchell finds herself drawn into the mystery.

This is what reading is all about! I can't recommend this audiobook enough. I desperately want the physical book to annotate but why would a physical book ever exist when it's a full cast dramatized narration? TRUE CRIME STORY is phenomenal. One of the most original thrillers I’ve read in years, perhaps ever. A gritty, twisted murder mystery told in the unique style of a true crime account. I’ve rarely raced through a book so fast....Absolutely remarkable.” - Robyn Young In 2013, Zoe was elected to the Loughton and Great Holm Parish Council, and is now its Vice Chair. A year later she became a Milton Keynes Borough Councillor. The novel is presented as a type of story withing a story, beginning in 2011 with the sudden disappearance of Zoe Nolan, a nineteen-year-old student from the city of Manchester. One day she simply slipped away from a party never to be seen again, leaving behind more than a few devastated people, including her parents, boyfriend, friends and twin sister. It took them WAY too long to investigate the passageway in the wardrobe. When all of the things kept disappearing and weird things happening, I knew it had to do with that area. It made me so irritated that they didn't look into it sooner. Also, why didn't Zoe attend any classes? Why was she lying and saying that she was--to cover up her affair? It made no sense to me. Plus I wanted payoff and wanted to know what happened to her. In December 17th 2011, 19 years old Manchester University student Zoe Nolan walks out of the party where it takes place at a shared accommodation she’d been living for last three months. Nobody sees her again and her body isn’t found! Her disappearance is still a big mystery!
