You can also have a Nissan Skyline in America. note The Skyline GTR was a sought-after import at the time, helped by the fact that it was featured in Gran Turismo among other things, but it wasn't until 2008 when Nissan would formally release the GTR outside of Japan. Wide-Open Sandbox: Started this for Racing Games; the first game was a PS2 launch title. Part of the fun for players was being able to use "joyride" in the first game, allowing two players to fart around New York or London however they pleased. Joe Bennett (November 3, 2008). "Midnight Club: Los Angeles review (PS3/X360)". Boomtown. Archived from the original on February 21, 2009 . Retrieved September 6, 2014.

A mode where players can freely cruise around the entire city. If a player wants to play a game they make one up and request it. If there is more than one race requested it will be added to a queue. If players wish to join the race they can accept the request, or they can choose to ignore it and keep cruising around the city at their leisure. Race Editor Pimped-Out Car: A key feature of the games. 3 and LA even have prize cars that had been pre-pimped by DUB Magazine. Do Well, But Not Perfect: In the time trial races, the second and third rounds are based on your previous time so doing too well in the previous round can make the target time for the next round next to impossible. a b Cam Shea (October 21, 2008). "Midnight Club: Los Angeles AU Review". IGN . Retrieved September 7, 2014. Old Save Bonus: If the player has a save file from Smuggler's Run on the PS2's memory card, the Baja Buggy becomes playable in the first game in the series. (Obviously only applies to the games produced for PS2, as opposed to LA which is for PS3.)Artifact Title: Midnight Club: Los Angeles has a full day and night cycle. The previous games were Always Night.

Police return but are no longer scripted to a specific race; they take notice of simple infractions in the game world (running red lights, speeding, burning out, hitting their cars or nearby cars, and driving offroad). If caught, players have the choice of pulling over (which will initiate a special cutscene when the police car approaches) or leading the police into a pursuit. The game goes into "Pursuit Mode" after a period of time or if the police lose sight of the player; this will also happen if the player decides to start the engine and flee the scene during the "pull over" cutscene. Infractions causing the game to go directly to pursuit mode include speeding and excessively damaging a police car. Police authorities will chase the player no matter where they are, and the longer the player evades capture, the higher the fine the player has to pay for if arrested. If the player's vehicle takes too much damage (totaled) during the pursuit, they are also arrested. [6] Expy: Owen, the British inspector who is after Farid in II, is clearly based on James Bond. Owen's car resembles Bond's Aston Martin Vanquish. There are a number of special abilities that have been brought into the game (a returning feature from the previous installment). These include an EMP, which disables the electronics of every vehicle around the player; Agro, which makes the player's vehicle indestructible-giving the ability to plow through traffic without slowing the car; Roar, which sends out a sound wave that will move traffic out of the player's way for a clear and straight path through the streets; and Zone, able to slow time and allow a temporary boost in handling. The previous installment had restricted special abilities to specific cars, but all vehicles in this game can now use any one of these above mentioned abilities, as chosen by the player. These abilities can also be changed at garages whenever necessary.Gas stations are located where you can refill your nitrous and repair your vehicle (in cruise). In a race, driving through a station refills one nitrous canister. Competing in races earns you more money and Rep. points depending on how well you do, how difficult the opposition and the Rep. level of your vehicle class (money only). Completion: Attaining 100% Completion in the first three games awards you with one of the best cars in the game. In Midnight Club: Street Racing you get the Zender Type S for completing Career Mode 100%. In II you get the SLF450X by completing Career Mode and all Circuit Races. In 3, you get the Cadillac Sixteen. Ruritania: Karol has a vaguely Eastern-European sounding accent and his statements on his origin imply he comes from some post-communist country.

On the PlayStation Portable version, it uses the same introduction showing Los Angeles as on console version, but it is not the exact same city as in the Xbox 360/Playstation 3 versions. Instead, it is the version of Los Angeles featured in Midnight Club II, in addition to Tokyo, also reused from Midnight Club II and Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition Remix.
