Description

The group was founded by sisters June and Jean Millington (on guitar and bass respectively), who had been playing music together since they moved from the Philippines to California in the early 1960s. Fast forward 40 or so years to the opening scenes of Hart’s “FANNY: The Right to Rock” in Goshen, MA, at the Institute for the Musical Arts — a nonprofit centered around supporting women and young girls interested in music founded by June Millington and her partner Ann Hackler — where Jean Millington strums on her 1962 precision bass (“it’s pretty much a collector’s item at this point”), June Millington unwraps her guitar from an old pair of pajamas in her case (“I like them to be comfortable”) and Howard-Darling reveals mini-pads are the best drum dampeners around (“pussy power secrets”). Stay weird and cool in the 100% sustainable cotton Navy T-shirt, catch all of that barbecue sauce you'll be spillin' this summer with the 100% natural cotton Black Apron, and get your groove on with the 12" Slipmat.

In 2018, original band members Jean Millington (bass), June Millington (lead guitar), and Howard-Darling reunited as Fanny Walked the Earth, releasing an eponymous album, their first recording together in more than 40 years. The seafoam green convertible makes a final appearance, this time with Howard-Darling popping their new album into the CD player before heading out onto the road. The album’s tribal title track and upbeat Girls On the Road extol the lows and highs of being Fanny. Though Jean Millington at first didn’t know how the band could continue, Howard-Darling reprised her role on the drums and Patty Quattro became the lead guitarist. After playing in several bands, they attracted the interest of producer Richard Perry who signed them to Reprise Records in 1969 as Fanny. FANNY WALKED THE EARTH is the most recent incarnation of Fanny, an amalgam of several early, Northern California all girl bands from the mid to late '60's". The group continued to pick up well-known fans; David Bowie sent the group a letter admiring their work and invited the band to a post-show party where he showed them mime techniques.
