Triz-EDTA alone has been shown in vitro to have potent bactericidal effects. Used as a lavage, Triz-EDTA has been shown to be effective against otitis externa caused by Bacillus spp., Staphylococcus aureus, Candida spp., Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Proteus vulgaris, Trichosporon spp., and Streptococcus spp. with no adverse effects.

Step 4: After they’re done shaking, take a cotton ball or piece of gauze and gently wipe and dry their ear canal. Just be careful to not go too deep into their ear so you don’t hurt them and never use a Qtip or anything with a pointed end.Cytology should be performed in all cases; it can be particularly useful to identify multiple organisms in mixed overgrowths or infections. Bacterial culture and sensitivity testing can help identify organisms that are hard to differentiate on cytology (e.g., streptococci, enterococci, E. coli, Klebsiella, Proteus and coryneforms). Knowledge of their likely sensitivity patterns can help guide treatment choices.

Numerous commercially available ear products contain antibiotics or disinfectants with antibacterial activity ( TABLE 3 ).
