Don Winslow wrote his masterpiece of a prequel to Savages. O, Chon, and Ben are an inseparable trio, something we learned in Savages. Any details I thought were missing from Savages, exists in this book. These two need to go together because any place that Savages fell short, Kings of Cool filled it in. Rachel Saint was the sister of one of the speared missionaries, and she continued to pursue his work. One of her first native converts, Toña, became a preacher. He attempted to convince the Huaorani that their traditional culture, everything they knew, was totally wrong. The story has a feminist slant, as it shows how five pampered wives learn to survive on a remote tropical island on their own. A bloody military takeover turns their island vacation deadly, and they must hide in the jungle while planning a way to escape the island unseen. They do get some survival training from the resort's boat captain, but soon each woman must push herself to do things she never thought she was able to do.
