Description

I was recommended the Rigol DS1054Z scope by a friend and all I can say is, he was spot on with his recommendation. It’s a fantastic little scope.

RIGOL DS1054Z digital oscilloscope is the new four-channel oscilloscope (50 MHz). This compact lightweight digital oscilloscope provides exceptionally accurate waveform viewing and measurements. RIGOL DS1054Z provides up to 30 000 wfms/s waveform acquisition rate. From there, it’s basically looking at datasheets and drawing a schematic of the circuit; inputs go at the left, outputs at the right, ground is at the bottom, and positive rails are at the top. It’s harder than it sounds – most of [Dave]’s expertise in this area is just pattern recognition. It’s one thing to reverse engineer a circuit through brute force, but knowing the why and how of how the circuit works makes things much easier. permanently on the rleft hand side of the screen is definitely useful. The controls can be a bit fiddly but All products in the DS1000Z series features a high-quality screen with an excellent easy to use interface that lets you access signal information such as frequency, period, rise time, pulse width and much more! Very satisfied with this product. Following three days usage, it proved to be everything I would have wished for. An added bonus was that the extended capabilities were official, as opposed to trial versions – thus increasing the value/usability of the scope. Regarding build quality – fantastic. It should provide many years valuable service. All in all, awesome service, polite and very helpful staff, and I am not the easiest customer to satisfy. A job well done Telonic.

Products that weigh more than 0.5 KG may cost more than what's shown (for example, test equipment, machines, >500mL liquids, etc). Multi-function knob too sensitive – difficult to press to select without rotating enough to change selection. The internal fan is a bit noisy but I got used it after a while and only really noticed the noise when I switched it off.

My only gripe is the fan is quite loud which I believe is a common complaint but easily overlooked or overcome with approx are bench position or otherwise. Value, Middle Value, Lower Value, Average, Vrms, Overshoot, Pre-shoot, Area, Period Area, Period Vrms,

Telonic mention a 12 month warranty, the rest of the world has a 3 year warranty… If you register the product with Rigol it appears to become a 3 year warranty, but only via Germany! I was expecting a basic oscilloscope and get a pretty cool one – if you don’t need sophiticated maths but just signals observation for good DIY electronic design – this one is more than enough… In summary, I would say that if you are looking for a low-cost scope – either 2 or 4-channel – then give this unit your serious consideration. As [Alfred] notes, there are many other tools available to fetch data and images from your Rigol oscilloscope. [Jenny List] wrote a two-part series on using Python to control your test instruments, and here’s an example of a simple Python script that does a screen grab. Do you have a favorite way to remotely operate your oscilloscope? Let us know in the comments below.

I use the cursor facility a lot and the on-screen display cannot be moved from its top-left corner and so it covers a useful part of the screen. It's perfectly possible that they aren't being met on a Rigol DS100Z. It has about 130MHz bandwidth and the sample rate drops to 250MHz when you turn all channels on. My workbench having become too small for both projects AND my vintage HP54501A I set out into the interweb with specs and a budget in mind for a new scope. There were many contenders in the my price range but most of them take a fair to inordinate drubbing for their shortcomings on the multitude of blogs and forums. We don't know the exact math of this interpolation, hence the FUD. The only 'issue' is that it's not what the OCD types think "sin(x)/x turned off" ought to be.

I don't own 1054Z, but I recall someone on the forum saying that he has been using 1054Z in his work, and he doesn't like it, because display is sluggish. In summary, if you are in the market for a digital oscilloscope that is worth buying, don’t wait – this is a fantastic scope and the one to go for. There’s almost too much in the box. It’s going to take a while to play with all these new features, but it should be fun. You get a lot of oscilloscope for the money, however it suffers from a triggering issue when using delays of 5 uS or multiples of 5 uS. AC coupled triggering is also unstable. Do you know how to harvest data from your bench tools, like plotting bandwidth from your oscilloscope with a computer? It’s actually pretty easy. Many bench tools make this easy using a standard protocol with USB to make the connection.
