Kate skilfully upends the expectation of a happily-ever-after ending, exploring the complexities of long-term love. The evocative, entertaining prose carries the reader along and the book is such an easy absorbing read it is rather deceptive because it’s only on reaching the end, and reflecting, that one realises the enormity of the novel and the questions it raises. The books featured on this site are aimed primarily at readers aged 13 or above and therefore you must be 13 years or over to sign up to our newsletter.

Kate Eberlen has gone beyond the initial star-crossed romance of Tess and Gus to explore the lasting nature of relationships with her characteristic sensitivity, perception and humour in this inspirational book. In ‘Ever After’ by Kate Eberlen, readers are introduced to Gus and Tess, and a romance that intertwines throughout both of their lives, spanning years, toing and froing the both of them, almost as though the universe is undecided about where they will end up, and if they will end up together.

I was not expecting this book to be so deep and interesting so I was pleasantly surprised and impressed at how well the author dealt with complicated relationship dynamics. A captivating story about love…at times heartbreaking and at others uplifting… and an ending that is as poignant as it is perfect. Towards the end of the novel, emotions intensify for the reader, especially for those who have perhaps experienced cancer in their own lives. Despite all that goes wrong and the novel’s poignant portrayal of illness, family issues and class differences, there is such a clear love between the characters. But parts of it dragged and it felt to long, I kept checking my kindle to see how far through I was which is never a good sign. Eberlan, who worked in theatre, publishing and teaching before becoming a mother and writing novels, said: “Like most fairytales, my novel Miss You ended with a beginning. Despite all that goes wrong - illness and family issues, it is obvious there is a deep love between the two main characters - Tess and Gus and that fate brought them together. Alternating between the perspectives of Tess and Gus, the novel explores the conflicts and challenges of new love and old loyalties, passion and duty, logic and belief, with readers racing to find out if the couple can or can't be together.

I really enjoyed meeting Alice O'Keeffe the other day, who interviewed me for The Bookseller magazine.
