Author Michael Rosen said she 'delighted and moved us for years and years and years and will go on doing so' Shirley Hughes began the reading lives of so many millions': Tributes to children's author and illustrator of Alfie and Dogger books after her death at 94... as fans thank her for writing the 'stories of their childhood'

Lucy Mangan in Bookworm: A Memoir of Childhood Reading says that now that she's a mom, she cries every time she reads this. I can see why. And the pictures are absolutely fantastic, so lively and expressive and lovely. Shirley Hughes manages to capture the simplicity and sincerity of a child’s love for his favourite toy through her narrative and illustrations; a love that many people can relate to. The conflict-resolution plot gives the perfect sense of catharsis for the child reader and turns this book into a must-read. Sutherland, Zena (1980). The Best in Children's Books: The University of Chicago Guide to Children's Literature, 1973–78. University of Chicago Press. p.231. ISBN 978-0-226-78059-7 . Retrieved 12 July 2015.

She also collaborated with her daughter, Clara Vulliamy, on the Dixie O'Day series; which saw Shirley with an illustrator for the first time with Shirley writing the text and Clara creating the illustrations. Features editor at Penguin Alice Vincent posted: 'Saw Shirley Hughes at Oxford Literary Festival, ages ago, with my mum. Another first in her career was being awarded the inaugural BookTrust Lifetime Achievement award in 2015 by a panel which included Sir Michael Morpurgo. King Charles expresses his 'greatest sorrow and deepest regret' over Britain's colonial past and says there can be 'no excuse' - but he stops short of full apology as he gives speech during state visit to Kenya

Her early work included illustrations for Dorothy Edwards' My Naughty Little Sister, with the first picture book she created being Lucy And Tom's Day in 1960. Years Celebration: Anniversary Top Tens". The CILIP Carnegie & Kate Greenaway Children's Book Awards. CILIP. 2007. Retrieved 2012-06-30. She studied drawing and costume design at the Liverpool School of Art and also studied fine art at Oxford's Ruskin School of Art.

Historical fiction novelist Hazel Gaynor put: 'Thank you, Shirley Hughes, for so many precious hours with your stories and my small boys.' During the search for Dogger the illustrations are smaller and laid out in a way that seems to emphasize the panic and eagerness to find poor old lost Dogger as mum tears the house apart looking for him. I love the illustration where Dad is out in the garden with a torch and Bella and mum stand by the door while dave looks forlornly out of his bedroom window. Sir Philip said: 'Shirley Hughes was admired, enjoyed, talked about, listened to, read, looked at, thought about as much as any other illustrator has ever been; but no other illustrator, I can say for certain, was ever loved as much.' Best of all has been perennially encountering very young children who are learning to look with such rapt pleasure and follow a story visually long before they are able to read.' When Dave loses his favourite toy, Dogger, he is very sad. But when Dogger turns up on a stall at the garden fete, everything seems all right - until someone else buys him before Dave can get the money!

What about when he saw the little girl walking away with his teddy - how do you think he felt then? Family is a constant throughout many of Shirley Hughes' stories, with brothers and sisters introduced and featured as main characters within the the story. In 'Dogger' i could relate both to Dave and his love for dogger and Bella being the kind older sister - I wasn't always kind, but i was an older sister. As a counterpoint, the little girl with the bow in her hair and the dress behaves like a spoilt brat, with no empathy for Davey who has lost his precious toy. This little girl is a Spoilt Brat Trope, drawn to pretty and new things, and therefore assuaged with the promise of owning a brand new teddy bear. It does concern me slightly that the spoilt brat trope is usually a girl dressed like this which — Bella notwithstanding — can sometimes morph into femme phobia. This is a minor concern.Hughes, best known for the Alfie series - about a boy called Alfie and his little sister Annie Rose - and children's picture book Dogger, died 'peacefully at home' on February 25. Beloved children's author and illustrator Shirley Hughes has died after a short illness at the age of 94, her family said today, as leading writers paid tribute. She said at the time: 'Being chosen for the BookTrust Lifetime Achievement Award is a tremendous honour which I appreciate more than I can say. Inside this lovely collection of Dogger story resources, you’ll find everything you need to add some magic to your display walls, reinforce story vocabulary and even role-play the story with your class.
