Description

Boston ivy ( Parthenocissus tricuspidatus) is a North American plant that is widely planted in the UK. Since they're such aggressive—sometimes even invasive—growers, ivy plants are very hardy, able to withstand full sun, partial shade, or even full shade (although the coloring of variegated species will fade without sufficient light).

Hedera helix - Wikipedia

The most handsome of these is the hardy Hedera colchica ‘Dentata Variegata’, a variegated grey-green and pale yellow form of Persian ivy. The northern and eastern limits are at about the −2°C (28°F) winter isotherm, while to the west and southwest, it is replaced by other species of ivy. Similar to Hedera helix, Hedera Hibernica or Irish ivy can be identified by its larger leaves and petioles. This variety of ivy needs full shade or partial sun to grow and is a good cover or shade provider for the area it is grown in. The flowers are visited by over 70 species of nectar-feeding insects, and the berries eaten by at least 16 species of birds. It turns sharp concrete corners of the city into something greener, causing mischief, and is a connective plant between the mossing ground and towering canopies of the forest. The species of ivy are largely allopatric and closely related, and many have on occasion been treated as varieties or subspecies of H.

The juvenile and adult shoots also differ, the former being slender, flexible and scrambling or climbing with small aerial roots to affix the shoot to the substrate (rock or tree bark), the latter thicker, self-supporting and without roots. As ivy is not directly harmful to trees and is beneficial to wildlife, control is not usually necessary. But still, this plant can stretch up to a whopping 40 feet in height and thrive best in hardiness zones 6 to 9. The meaning is uncertain, but the word may be cognate with the Ancient Greek ἴφυον ( íphuon), referring to not Hedera helix, but the unrelated English lavender, or Lavandula angustifolia. The Golden Ivy can grow up to 40 feet tall and requires partial shade or full shade from the sunlight to grow. Native to the East Asian region, the Japanese Ivy is found to be growing on slopes of rocks, tree trunks, and across woodlands.

Hedera - Wikipedia

Both common ivy and Atlantic ivy are tolerant of shade and survive in all but the most dry, waterlogged, or acidic soils. It’s a fast-growing plant and makes an excellent houseplant, though you can use it as a groundcover in certain areas.

The ancient Greeks and Romans believed that wearing a wreath of ivy leaves around the head would prevent one from getting drunk. This unique leaf shape gives it a pleasantly-open, angular texture, adding variety amongst a display with lots of other plants.

Between September and November, look out for the yellow-green flowers that grow in rounded clusters; these are followed by black berries. More than 140 species of insect and 17 species of bird feed on ivy in Britain, and countless others appreciate its evergreen shelter. This evergreen plant makes a beautiful ground cover and can be trained to grow along a trellis or other structures. Persian ivy ( Hedera colchica), which has variants like sulphur heart ivy, is a vine that can grow outdoors to lengths of nearly 40 feet. Once it reaches the upper parts of a tree’s canopy, ivy often produces shrubby (arboreal), mature growth which bears yellow-green flowers followed by black berries.Ivies are natives of Eurasia and North Africa but have been introduced to North America and Australia. umbels, greenish-yellow, and very rich in nectar, an important late autumn food source for bees and other insects.
