Description

In 1909 a character in a novel by Lilian Bell saw the following words as a motto on a wall as noted previously: If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Just One Damned Thing After Another? A lady automobile tourist who had met with two accidents in one day, remarked that she had seen a post card inscribed, “ This world is just one damned thing after another.” And she was almost persuaded to believe it. I didn't even get that far because I just didn't want to. this is not St mary's as I know and love it!

Life is just one darn thing after another, and at this hour of the night, after being alone all day, one may remark, so be it; for many are called but few are frozen. So what’s the use?” I enjoy a well-written time travel story, and I really, really thought that “Just One Damned Thing After Another “might be one. But it wasn't, I just read for educational, scientific purposes and kept urging the plot: “Come on, give me my bone, I’m digging for!” No bone, no happy reader. And the building itself. I lost myself in the description when Max first arrived. The library but also the hall must be so fascinating. I would feel right at home there too! I don't know what Marty Ross's brief was, and I certainly respect the skill it takes to adapt a narrative into an audio play, but Audible Studios have messed up this production good and proper.

At the invitation of a former teacher, Madeleine Maxwell, known as Max, applies for a job as a historian at St. Mary’s Institute of Historical Research, a rather secretive part of the University of Thirsk. It’s a little unclear what exactly her job will be, other than that it offers poor pay, worse conditions, and “a less structured existence.” Despite this unpromising description, Max decides to take a chance. She soon finds out that she’ll be part of a time traveling team of historians, investigating major historical events in the past. It’s a dangerous job: the mortality rate among historians is alarmingly high, and there’s something strange going on in the hierarchy at St. Mary’s itself. Knowing how pantiwadulous so very many people become at the merest whiff of a spoiler ::eyeroll::, I will say that Taylor's History has a very...personal...stake in the Universe. Go find out fer yer darnself! Just One Damned Thing After Another appeared on the USA Today Best-Selling Books list on 21 January 2016 at #74. [8] It earned a starred review from Publishers Weekly, which called it "a carnival ride" in a "world ... depicted in lush detail". [9] The review in Library Journal lauded the book's "appealing cast of characters", with "plenty of humor, lots of action, and even a touch of romance". [10] Bibliography [ edit ] The Chronicles of St Mary's [ edit ]

This is the story of Madeline Maxwell, a historian who is recruited by the secretive St. Mary’s, a institution that “investigates major historical events in contemporary time.” After training, she gets sent to the trenches of WWI France, and other places and times, before things go to hell. The Chronicles of St. Mary’s tells the chaotic adventures of Max and her compatriots—Director Bairstow, Leon “Chief” Farrell, Mr. Markham, and many more—as they travel through time, saving St. Mary’s (too often by the very seat of their pants) and thwarting time-travelling terrorists, all the while leaving plenty of time for tea. I've really been enjoying this new style of meshing audiobooks with full cast dramatisations from Audible! This is the third I've heard, diving into a new franchise all fresh, and it keeps up the standards I've experienced elsewhere.

one thing after another

Oddly, though I guessed a few secrets/surprises early on, while I listened there were several times when I missed the actual revelation of the secrets. The character had a mysterious something (no spoilers), then the event finished and later the character talked about how surprised she was by the revelation of the mysterious something. But when did anyone actually reveal the mysterious something? I didn't hear it--and I was listening with full attention. It happened at least twice. Trouble is, she had not much to work with in the first place. Jodi Taylor did not bother about anything like characterisation, structure or plot. I mean, there were people and they had names and sometimes I was told that the guy was a technician and he was big, but.... there was another guy who had a name, a job title, who was also big, I think? While Toynbee, quoting Hubbard, said that “History is just one damned thing after another”, there’s a not dissimilar quote from Oscar Wilde that also sums up this book. Wilde said that, “”Life is one fool thing after another where as love is two fool things after each other.” The premise: fascinating. Especially the part about history fighting to preserve itself, like a living entity.

I am frustrated by this audioplay... I love this St. Mary's universe and want nothing but continued success and fame for author Jodi Taylor, including expansion to other forms of media if possible. I am never the person to snobbishly complain about book-to-video adaptations and actually prefer the opportunity to see a different creative take on great stories. But the script of this adaptation just doesn't sit right when compared to the book series. In short: Excellent fun for the reader in need of fun, thrills, and a larger sense of significance that can easily be ignored if the mood is light. Free. Now, what on earth are you waiting for? Free! Go! GO! I wanted to like this book so much as so many of my trusted GR Friends enjoyed it, but I just couldn't get into it. Jodi always wanted to write books; being an author was a long-time dream of hers. She also always loved history. She is a self-claimed history nut. Thus she knew that she would have to combine her two passions into writing historical novels. As the girls finished their day’s outing, one of them remarked as she and the others wedged themselves into the hot dressing rooms of the Herald Square:Last Updated on April 15, 2020 Jodi Taylor is the author we know and love for her Chronicles of St. Mary’s time travel series and her newer Time Police spin-off series.
