However it is an interesting and informative read It made me thankful for the country, time period and circumstances in which I live and the medical advancements that have been made. I would say there is more anxiety attending childbirth these days; more caesarian sections, more inductions, more drugs, more drips, more medicine in other words. She is the author of The Greedy Queen, Eating with Victoria, Victory in the Kitchen: The Story of Churchill's Cook, and The Official Downton Abbey Cookbook.

The True Stories Behind Call the Midwife - Yours The True Stories Behind Call the Midwife - Yours

During the time that Worth recounts, most women delivered their babies at home and were deeply suspicious of hospitals. As well as the name of the convent, names of the characters are generally pseudonymous, with the exception of Cynthia, who remained a close friend of Jennifer Worth's in later life. I didn't mind Jenny's negative thoughts though, I actually found them refreshing in that they were brutally honest. She also earned the confidences of some whose lives were truly stranger, more poignant and more terrifying than could ever be recounted in fiction. Worth frequently comments that certain medical procedures had previously not been available or affordable to the lower classes.Worth asks, “What woman worthy of the name Mother would stand on a high moral platform about selling her body if her child were dying of hunger and exposure? The men are polite and respectful to us midwives, but completely withdrawn from any familiarity, let alone friendship. I really enjoyed Jenny's narration, she wasn't particularly nice or likeable but she was engaging and honest.

The spring cleaning has yet to begin, and March Madness, especially for us UNC Tar Heel fans, has stolen more reading time than I expected this month. Worth wrote the first volume of her memoirs by hand and sent them to Coates to read, and Coates later served as advisor on the books and the TV adaptation. While I enjoyed the insight into the lives of several midwives during the 1950s, I was disappointed that there were so many inappropriate things in this book.
