Description

It was not one of those strong, impulsive feelings that can hit two people like an electric shock when they first meet, but something quieter and gentler, like two tiny lights traveling in tandem through a vast darkness and drawing imperceptibly closer to each other as they go. While Toru is in town gathering supplies for his flee he reads an article about Noboru Wataya, the article explains that Noboru is now trying to become a politician. As our meetings grew more frequent, I felt not so much that I had met someone new as that I had chanced upon a dear old friend.

Whenever the protagonist didn't know what to do next (which happened constantly) a psychic would suddenly and inexplicably appear to tell him the next step, and whenever the action began to slow down, the author would include a surreal dream or grotesque murder. In the beginning, Toru desires to make his wife happy by going on long day trips to find her missing cat.

The Japanese and English versions of The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle vary significantly because of some changes that were made in the English translation. From his wife Kumiko, who disappears shortly after the cat, to her sociopathic older brother Noboru and their nihilistic neighbour May, the characters in this postmodern fairytale drag Toru and the reader out of their comfort zones. Further differences exist between the American and British editions, but these are much more superficial.

Murakami’s first novel, Hear the Wind Sing, was released in 1979 and received considerable positive reception. His most famous writings include the novels Confessions of a Mask and The Temple of the Golden Pavilion, as well as the autobiographical essay Sun and Steel. While strolling through his neighborhood, he comes across the Miyawaki residence, an abandoned home with a dry well on the property. For example, the two missing chapters from the second volume of the original three-volume elaborate on the relationship between Toru Okada and Creta Kano, and a "hearing" of the wind-up bird as Toru burns a box of Kumiko's belongings (Book 2 Chapter 15).
