One of the biggest themes in Descendant of the Crane, in my opinion, is morality and how it ties into sacrifice. i understand their importance in creating a complex storyline, but their presence in a story shouldnt mean that the fantasy components of a fantasy novel take a back seat.

I really wish Joan He had stuck with the initial theme (that Hesina didn't really want a love interest for she wished to only trust herself for a time) and left it to our imaginations because it made a book which had very adult themes suddenly feel quite immature - the audience placement here is really confused between YA and adult fantasy because of that.
