Description

I am not autistic and harbour no suspicions that I may be, but I do not sit entirely comfortably within society’s notions of womanhood.

This book is a must read for all women who have or suspect they have autism, parents of girls with autism, partners, friends or relatives of girls and women with autism. For selvom forfatteren ikke selv er intellektuelt handicappede så giver hun gennem hele bogen henvisninger til yderlig læsning. autistic = perseverating on details others discard, as in a poem: the tension between the poetic line and its grammar'. I found some things interesting, like the author's own experiences at school, with the speech therapist, and seeing an educational psychologist. How as women we are held to certain expectations of how we act and behave and are constantly reminded and policed on that. Det er 4 kvinder som forfatteren identificerer som “werid sisters” som blev udstød pga der unormale opførsel.

The author relates to the four women and finds common ground with them, she empathises and apologises for the wrongs that these women experienced. The bleeding edge of autistic advocacy seems to be on social media and what the medium often lacks is nuance. If you have any level of interest in this subject, you will find this book honest and enlightening and you will more than likely want to read more. Det var en super interessant vinkel at tage at det den manglende villighed til efterleve feminitet på samme måde som neurotypiske der gør folk utilpasse. Publication dates are subject to change (although this is an extremely uncommon occurrence overall).I have been waiting to read something like this for a very long while, and I know I will keep coming back to it many times now that I have finished it. For someone on the outside (but not entirely), I am - and others, too, I’m sure - often thirsty for more understanding and insight than a Twitter post can provide. In her letters, the author reveals insights into her own experiences that at times made for difficult reading (often very relatable), but with an ultimately empowering message. If you don't register someone as a fellow human being, you are less inclined to treat them like one.

Times Literary SupplementIt seemed to me that many of the moments when my autism had caused problems, or at least marked me out as different, were those moments when I had come up against some unspoken law about how a girl or a woman should be, and failed to meet it. There is so much to love about this book, particularly for anybody already interested in any of the subject matters explored. Yes, we do have to say so every time, because every time we see another woman's body objectified, it is by implication an attack on our personhood, and when we are attacked in this way, we have every right to re-assert that personhood by refusing that objectification. The letter to Frau V speaks to Limburg’s experience as a disabled mother and the child of a mother who did her best to advocate for her daughter in a society that offered absolutely no recourse to the kind of help and support she and her child needed.I hope that in future editions of this book, the author can at least make a note acknowledging that she’s really mostly talking about people who were assigned female. In media (social and otherwise) I find there’s often a focus on sympathy/praise for the parents rather than on the experiences of autistic people. Some of the data that are collected include the number of visitors, their source, and the pages they visit anonymously. I thought at some point I would get used to the second-person letters to various "weird sisters" in history, but I never did.

I’ve always felt…well, a bit weird, and this book has also granted me some insight of more personal relevance that I will need to dwell on. The author did an awesome job explaining how it feels to have autism rather than explaining what autism is.Payments made using National Book Tokens are processed by National Book Tokens Ltd, and you can read their Terms and Conditions here. Når disse fortælling og refleksioner kobles sammen med feminisme og handicapaktivsme, så sker der magi. I did feel the letter writing aspect lost it’s way a little, each letter started strongly, but then moved into a tangent that was more focussed on Limburg than on the recipient of the letter.
