Though small enough to take wherever you go, the MiniRig 3 delivers a sensational sound quality that’s wonderfully clean and balanced. Although you won’t get the same crispness as you’d get from a speaker with a dedicated tweeter, you get much more than you’d expect. However, at the louder levels, the low frequencies do begin to dwindle. MiniRig 3 Review: Pros and Cons As mentioned above, the MiniRig 3 is intended to be a little more tech-friendly than its predecessors. A key feature of the Minirig’s design is that it only uses a single speaker. This allows the company to fit in a 3-inch driver in a device that’s only 4 inches across by 3.75 inches deep. Devices that use two speakers, such as the Beats Pill, may be able to offer stereo sound, but from much smaller drivers and a much larger unit. Usually, when you see something as small as this compact device, it’s easy to assume that you’re going to miss out on functionality, sound stage, or volume.Aside from the points mentioned so far, there are a handful of additional features that might make the MiniRig 3 more appealing to some professionals. Compared to similarly-priced products, such as the Ultimate Ears Wonderboom, it isn’t quite as insightful across the board. We’d like more texture to each instrument, so this speaker can really show off the shimmer of cymbals or the throbs of bass guitars. Keep in mind that there are also a host of additional peripherals that you can link to the MiniRig 3 from the same brand. When you consider that you can daisy chain as many of these devices together as you want, the volume potential is astronomical.

Sound quality. Quite frankly this is the biggie. Pasce has managed to cram a three-inch neodymium motor system inside the Minirig's 72 x 101.6 mm dimensions (height x diameter). Frequency response is consequently an impressive 100-20,000Hz (+/- 3db within this range), but most surprising is a 15-watt digital amplifier in a speaker that weighs just 424g. This is roughly five times the circa three-watt amplifier we have come to expect from portable speakers of a similar size. Used in low gain, the device gets adequately loud when used in combination with my Huawei P9 and iPhone 7, but when I pressed the single all-purpose button, it switches over to the high gain mode the Minirig begins to roar.The combination of it being able to get so loud and the quantity of bass from such a small unit impressed me most. I thought some of the other speakers that I own from this price category are excellent, and any issues they did have could be forgiven because of that eternal struggle of balancing sound, price, and size. I didn't expect it to be as markedly different from what I had heard before, but it was. The Minirigs is not just a little better; it is a lot better.
