EN10088-3 Replaces BS970 Part 1: 1991 & BS970 Part 3: 1991 covering chemical composition & mechanical properties Grade 316 stainless steel bars contains an additional element of molybdenum for an improved corrosion resistance in chloride environments often referred to as the 'marine grade'. The structure of 316 stainless steel gives excellent toughness. This combination of toughness and resistance lends well to coastal balustrading, boat fitting, brewery equipment and more. Although more expensive, the one major benefit of using Grade 316, is it’s ability to withstand saltwater. For this reason, grade 316 is often referred to as the marine grade of stainless steel.

Stainless steel flat bars can be polished in various ways for an attractive appearance. Polished sections are desirable for architectural applications and decorative uses. It is useful where sanitation and cleanliness are important. Non magnetic in the annealed condition. Hardness and tensile strength can be increased by cold working, but modified by lowered carbon content providing good resistance to corrosion in welded construction where subsequent heat treatment is not practical. The molybdenum gives 316 better overall corrosion resistant properties than Grade 304, particularly higher resistance in chloride environments.
