Description

Writers’ Tears is a range of independently bottled Irish whiskey by Walsh Whiskey, a company founded by husband and wife team Rosemary and Bernard Walsh in 1999 to market their Hot Irishman brand of bottled Irish Coffee.

Finally, we have the Writers’ Tears Copper Pot Japanese Cask finish. Aged in ex-bourbon barrels before a 9-month finish in one of two Japanese Mizunara Oak casks. This expression was bottled at a healthy 55% abv and was launched in time for Ireland's much hyped trip to the Rugby World Cup finals. It is only available in either the Dublin or Cork outlets of The Loop Duty Free and is priced at €100 (duty paid) or €84 (duty free). Writers' Tears Copper Pot - review Writer’s Tears Irish Whiskey is remarkable. I was not expecting to like a 40%, young, chill-filtered whiskey as much as I am. The blend of Irish Single Malt and Irish Single Pot Still creates a richness and depth that blows past my expectations and has me sitting here smiling like an idiot while typing this up and sipping on a glass. While we have divested from our own distillery, it is a significant milestone in our whiskey journey.

As whiskey creators, we work with a range of carefully selected partners to explore how different grains, whiskey styles and woods interact and contribute to taste over time – plenty of it! We seek-out the best styles and distillates in Ireland, as well as casks from the four corners of the world. When cask-hunting, we look for, not just those of the highest wood quality and barrel structure but, most importantly, the ones that have been seasoned with exceptional liquid. Our journey has led us to:

Home of Writers’ Tears and The Irishman Premium Irish Whiskeys

Nose: Sugar, confectionaries, bubblegum. After the initial strength of the sweetness - malt and cream come to the forefront, with vanilla and citrus making an appearance as well. This is a light nose, indicative of its 80 proof. In 2013 the Italian company Illva Saronno, owners of Tia Maria, took a 50% stake in Walsh Whiskey for €25 million and the company soon began construction of a new Irish distillery in Co. Carlow, which was completed in 2016. In 2019, however, the partnership was dissolved, with the Walshes keeping their brands and relinquishing their stake in the Royal Oak distillery to Saronno. Writer’s Tears Irish Whiskey is a brilliant whiskey… I just wish that it was fuller and richer and they messed with it less. A combination of rich, buttery, fruity and copper Irish Single Malt and Single Pot Still whiskey it’s a thing of beauty. Truly, it is… or at least it could be. The Walshes introduced The Irishman Irish cream liqueur in 2005, and the following year, having secured a supply deal with Midleton distillery, The Irishman brand pivoted towards independent whiskey bottling with the launch of The Irishman Founders Reserve whiskey. In the mouth: A thinnish mouthfeel on arrival but gain fairly sweet with honey, malt, vanilla and orchard fruit. Some lemon before the spice builds – light pepper with grassy, green raw malt. The finish is of medium length and full of warming spice and a hint of lime marmalade. Score: 6/10 Writers' Tears Double Oak - review

Established in 1999, Bernard and Rosemary Walsh started Walsh Whiskey with the vision to create whiskey which “offer[s] taste profiles that are unique, through the recreation of traditional Irish whiskey recipes from the 19th Century – Ireland’s golden era of whiskey distilling.” With a market saturated by excellent Irish whiskey, the majority owned by the Pernod Ricard conglomerate , Walsh Whiskey has proved that the Writers’ Tears line is a dependably available and quality Irish whiskey. If we decide not to exercise or enforce any right or provision of these Terms, such decision shall not constitute a waiver of such right or provision. Writers’ Tears Double Oak, is a blend of the two premium whiskey styles aged in two types of wood – American and French Oak. It is triple-distilled, non-chill filtered and bottled at 46% ABV. The new expression is made possible by a close collaboration between the Walsh family in Ireland’s County Carlow and the Legaret family in Cognac, France. Malt, caramel, vanilla beans, toffee, fruit, oily spice and a bit of copper. It might be a bit limited in scope, but the richness of what’s there is quite nice.
