At the end of 2018 the big news in Continental tyres was the introduction of a successor to the Grand Prix 4000 S II, unsurprisingly named the Grand Prix 5000. Not only did Continental replace arguably the most successful clincher tyre of all time, but they finally produced a tubeless version. To read about all other test conditions and how tires are tested, please read the Rolling Resistance Test Conditions Sorry but for far too many people who have ridden the GP4S this is a complete contrast to their experiences including mine. The tyres feel dead/unresponsive and sluggish, you do not keep your "summer speed" at all as they feel really draggy, they might have some additional grip in the wet but whatever micro improvement over x tyre I couldn't tell but having some unmeasurable extra grip at the expense of how they are much less a quality ride and lower performance (over Giant P-SL2s in 28mm) would simply not be worth it at all. As noted previously, the measured weight is 215 grams which is less than the 225 grams specified by Continental. The Grand Prix 4000S II is also quite a big tire with a width of 27 mm and a height of 25 mm on a 17C rim. All in all, not bad for a tire with a weight of 215 grams.

Off-course, what will be won in the rolling resistance department, will be lost in the aerodynamics department. Puncture Force Sharp Needle: Pre-2021, this score was known as 'Puncture Resistance'. On some tires with weakly bonded casing wires, the sharp needle can split the casing wires resulting in a lower score.The expertly designed layer within these tyres acts as an intermediate between the sharp outside objects and the inner tube within. Keep this in mind when you're comparing, but I don't think anyone is going to use 120 psi in a 28C tire anyway. But the Continental was only about 1.5 watts slower than most of the other 25mm tires on a perfectly smooth drum, at a 24.5w cost at 40kph compared to most of the other fast tires that were about 23w. All in all, I think the differences aren't that significant, in particular between the 23C and 25C tires. I'm looking forward to repeating this

Performance in the rolling resistance test is great. At an air pressure of 120 psi, rolling resistance is a low 12.2 watts, which is excellent for a Tour / Race type tire. Dropping air pressure to 100 psi results in a rolling resistance of 12.9 watts. Lowering air pressure even lower results in a rolling resistance of 13.7 watts at an air pressure of 80 psi. Chain reaction Cycles and CRC are trading names of Wiggle Ltd (In Administration) registered in the United Kingdom at 1000 Lakeside, Suite 310, Third Floor N E Wing, Portsmouth, Hampshire, PO6 3EN, So in my view these tyres are well worth the money, not only for life span, performance, grip, reduced rolling resistance, and puncture resistance.In theory that means sealant isn't required, but Continental recommend you use 30-60ml of sealant to protect against punctures. Everything else being equal that extra layer also means increased rolling resistance, but it seems everything else is far from equal. According to Jarno Bierman at bicyclerollingresistance.com, the tubeless GP 5000 has very low rolling resistance, second only to the Vittoria Corsa Speed Open TLR, which has thinner tread. I'll be comparing a 23C, 25C, and 28C Grand Prix 4000S II to see how weight, size, and rolling resistance compares across different sized road bike to know when you decide to go for a bigger tire because you like a more comfortable ride or ride on bad roads with potholes a lot. The tubeless GP 5000 is available in 25, 28 and 32mm widths, plus a 28mm wide 650B version. Our samples of the 25mm versions weighed an average of 302g each; we've seen reliable reports of 295g samples too. That's heavier than some comparable tubeless-ready tyres (a 25mm Schwalbe Pro One weighs about 255g) because Continental has gone for a fully tubeless construction with an airtight rubber layer on the inside.
