There was an old Presbyterian church called ‘The Mother Of Sorrows” that was abandoned in the Helltown area. Stories of Satanists performing rituals and animal mutilations in the church was one of the most popular stories in the area. It’s said the churches architecture resembled upside-down crosses and other Satanic symbols. Here is the “upside down” cross that so many were convinced was satanic. But what you may not know is that according to cryptozoologists, Ohio is a hotbed for cryptids & creature activity. From Bigfoot-esque monsters to massive, kidnapping reptiles to all other mythological things that go bump in the night, the stories that come out of Ohio are some of the most unique in the country. In 1758 tensions were at an all time high between the Native Americans and the white settlers from the east. In an effort to stop the bloodshed the Treaty Of Easton was drafted, but unfortunately this meant a lot of natives had to leave their homelands and move further west. According to reports, two young boys were playing on the banks of a small creek when they were startled by a massive, snake-like creature. The monster sprouted arms and snatched one of the boys, dragging him nearly 100 yards to a massive sycamore tree that was assumed to be its den. The stories of the Loveland Frogmen have been repeated throughout the decades, with the most recent sighting taking place in 2016.These creatures were ten feet long, and each had four long arms, “on the end of which were claws that resembled the hands of an ape.” These arms they used to grab onto the ship and in defense, taking hooks and other implements from the sailors and trying to rescue their fellow monsters whenever one would be caught. The Omaha Daily Bee story is of another popular Ohio monster, the Lake Erie Monster, although this particular iteration of the monster is unlike the more typical, large, serpentine appearance. The legend goes that the government was using Helltown to dump toxic chemicals. Those chemicals then somehow created mutants which run around at night with glowing heads.

When the Cedar Bog was first opened as a nature preserve in 1942, Ohioans reported seeing a large ape-like creature in the area. After some teenagers went missing at the Bog, the existence of the monster was solidified in the minds of the people. Conservation has become more important to anglers in general and is, in fact, one of the reasons that Wheatley started Monsters on the Ohio. In the 1990s, a reward was offered to anyone who could catch Bessie, but alas, the reward wasn’t claimed. Are you familiar with any of these unusual pieces of creepy Ohio legends and lore? Described as a werewolf-like creature, the Dogman has reportedly been seen all throughout Ohio, including our very own Franklin County. Balint, Ed (June 7, 2022). "Ghosts, Bigfoot and UFOs: Monster Fest coming to downtown Canton next year". The Repository . Retrieved November 3, 2022. Of those 160 articles, it will probably come as no surprise that the vast majority of them, almost 70, are of the sea serpent or sea monster variety, although when I say “seas monster” I’m here counting large fish, reptile or amalgamated mystery creatures seen not only in the ocean, but also in lakes and occasionally even in rivers. Tyler Moses and Bill Parfitt were crowned the eight annual Monsters on the Ohio champs. Their bag of 112.2 pounds included the second biggest fish in the tournament at 57.7 pounds. It was a true team effort with both anglers contributing one of the overs to the total weight. If you’re anything like myself, you have to admit a bit of skepticism about some of these creatures, but maybe that’s only how you feel until you see one for yourself. The first tale is from an 1855 issue of the Carroll Free Press, “The Monster Snake Taken,” and it rather breathlessly chronicles the capture of a serpentine lake monster from an unnamed body of water that empties into the Genesee River. The creature was captured by one Daniel Smith, “an old whaleman,” with his harpoons, strong whaleline and his experience of hunting whales; the article claims the monster was taken alive, essentially leashed to the shore with a harpoon and wire, and was measured to be 59-feet, five-inches long. That’s pretty precise, given that it was still alive and thrashing when the measurements were taken! Ever since being addicted to the catfish scene I have heard about Aaron Wheatley’s Monsters on the Ohio catfish tournament. I almost made it in 2016, but a hurricane had other ideas about where I needed to be. A conflict in 2017 kept me away again. Finally, this year I have plans to make the 14-hour drive to Owensboro to see for myself why everyone talks so highly about this popular catfish tournament. Bigley II, James (March 10, 2020). "Minerva Monster: Documentary Film Screening Explores The Local Legend". Cleveland Magazine . Retrieved November 3, 2022. Although sightings continued in nearby counties, none were as detailed as the Cayton families, whose stories remained unchanged for decades.
