I knew there was a tsar, Nicholas II, then a revolution, then he and his family were killed. The first part of this book highlights the complete and utter incompetence and complacency of the last tsar of Russia. As a leader, he was a total failure in a very "let them eat cake" kind of way. While his terribly unprepared and unprovisioned soldiers were at war with Germany, the government was also fighting battles with the starving citizens of the country.
