Description

The only thing to ensure is that you buy dimmable LED GU10s if you have a dimmer switch or non-dimmable if you have a normal switch in your home. So you have MR16 bulbs… to their D900 Curve LED downlight. The voltage is approximately 36.5V (oscillating slightly on account of voltage ripple from the 50 Hz mains) DC. Typically, LED drivers are limited to an upper level power output of 100W - 200W. This means that LED drivers are the power supply of choice for small LED lighting setups in the home, as individual LEDs may only require 2V - 4V DC. When LEDs are connected in a series - or ‘array’ - a much higher voltage is required. In this case, an LED transformer may be installed (e.g. to power a light strip). LED Transformers

The transformer you need for strip lighting depends on multiple factors, such as the length of strip, watts per chip and total wattage. LED strip lighting comes with either small LED chips or larger LED chips, as well as a variety of sizes ranging from 1m to 5m. Small LED strip light chips are marked “3528” and measure 3.5mm x 2.8mm, while large LED strip light chips are marked “5050” and measure 5mm x 5mm. Larger 5050 chips are brighter per metre than small 3528 chips. To calculate the total wattage of the LED strip you wish to power you have to do one of these simple sums: • 60 small LED chips: calculate 5 watts per metre • 120 small LED chips: calculate 10 watts per metre • 60 large LED chips: calculate 15 watts per metre You then need to add another 20% to avoid potential overload on the transformer. within a 100 Hz waveform. Despite the differences in the voltage waveform, all five transformers successfully powered the Most people tend to focus on wattage when it comes to measuring the brightness they need. However, it’s slightly different for LED bulbs. Firstly, the true brightness of LED bulbs is measured in lumens. For instance, a 4w MR16 LED spotlight which has 320 lumens produces a comparable brightness to 50w standard light. It just consumes a tenth of the energy. It’s also worth noting how beam angle effects brightness. A narrower beam angle (of 45° or less) produces a more concentrated, and thus brighter, light. A wider beam angle will spread the light and create a more subtle glow. Most people who choose to switch to LED will do so for domestic use. In most common cases, the housing of the individual LED light bulb will contain the relevant driver suitable to power that bulb. This means that the bulb is ready for use and will not require any further consideration over drivers/transformers. Bulbs that contain an LED driver and may therefore be used without the addition of an external transformer include:

The MR16 LED replacements I bought had 50 Hz plainly written on them. Although the electronic transformer is rated 0 - 50 watt it does not state the output frequency and likely it is in the MHz range, so it would be safer to get a toroidal transformer like this one where you are sure the output is 50 Hz.series to give the necessary resistance for the transformer to work. All wiring in homes is done in parallel, never series. MoneySavingExpert.com is part of the MoneySuperMarket Group, but is entirely editorially independent. In fact the datasheet shows how to wire the transformer to multiple lamps so it all looks OK to me. Three LED lights from different manufacturers were tested on each transformer including a Brightgreen DR450 7WI had transformers on all my downlights when I moved in, several transformers had gone, slowly I replaced them all with 240V LEDs (like these: https://www.screwfix.com/p/enlite-e8cx-fixed-fire-rated-led-downlight-without-bezel-580-620lm-8w-220-240v/3631x). Now the older magnetic transformers will work perfectly with LED MR16s. The issue is that the electronic low voltage transformers may not. The reason for this is that they need a minimum voltage to pass through them to operate; for example the transformer in my kitchen is 40w – 400w. Historically there were 6 50w halogen bulbs in the circuit – giving a total load of 300w.

Would it make more sense to swap these out for another 4 LED-specific transformers, or replace all 4 with a single transformer? I see a lot of support for swapping out in favour of GU10 fittings, but I'm not sure about the extra effort of running earth to each fitting, as well as any mess I might make of the ceiling when replacing them.MR16 LED spotlights come in different colours too. These colours are measured in Kelvins. The lower the Kelvin, the warmer the light, the higher the Kelvin, the cooler the light. You can choose from Cool White, Warm White and Daylight colours. Where you use these colours is entirely up to you. If you want an idea, many customers use Warm White for cosy living areas, Cool White for bathrooms, while Daylight offers a happy medium. You can read more about our post on colour options here to see how they could look in your home. As you can hopefully see in the image above, I have a single transformer, which has the following specifications: Electronic Transformer for LV-Halogen Lamps
