Reading texts on Paul Weller afterwards have made it even easier to grasp the meaning of these lyrics. Sound Affects is The Jam's fifth studio album and features the classic hit 'That's Entertainment' and the number one single 'Start!

No trace of that here: he is furious, and seems to run forward, dragging the other players with him, towards the ballot box, and they can hardly keep pace. This was punk-pop of the highest mark, and it was "Pretty Green" that caught me off guard, the bass riff urging everyone to dance. I've read stories of crackly, skipping, dust-ridden, fingerprint-ridden slabs of junk leaving this pressing plant. Mea culpa, Sometimes just have have to try it for yourself instead of formulating an opinion based on what you read on the internet.

I'm 55 and have been enjoying this absolute gem of a record since it was released in my graduating year of high school in 1980. Sound Affects was reissued on 8 November 2010 as a two-CD deluxe edition to celebrate its 30th anniversary. What a stupendous mix of this record - there are sounds included on this pressing you never even heard on previous pressings.

The song is also the only recording by the Jam to include sitar lines, which are buried in the mix, but are more prominent in the demo version. is built around an almost exact copy of the bassline from the Beatles' " Taxman", the first track on Revolver, and includes a homage to its guitar solo. Not only are all the dynamics fully retained in this wonderful new remaster, but there has been a careful amount of re-equalization to correct from the midrange-heavy remaster from 2000.Sound Affects' is filled with so many great songs: `Set The House Ablaze' has a great whistle-hook, `Monday' has an attractive melancholy melody, `Scrape Away' is a strong and hook-filled album closer. If you're not familiar with "Sound Affects", if it is before your time, then you simply have not fully discovered rock 'n roll. The funny thing is that a more common complaint about "gz vinyl", and I've seen it on-line myself, are inner sleeves that are too loose and that tend to buckle when you insert the record into the outer sleeve. One of the most popular bands to emerge from the English punk rock scene of 1977; The Jam had a phenomenal impact on pop music and wider youth culture. It wasn't until first hearing `Going Underground' in the early 2000's on VH1 Classic that I decided to investigate some of The Jam's music.

In BBC Radio 6 Music's documentary The Jam: Made in Britain, Paul Weller cited Sound Affects as his favourite Jam album. Pardoning the overly snug inner sleeve, and the creased cover (which I knew about before-hand), this is a masterpiece. If `The Gift' and `Setting Sons' are given the deluxe treatment, and remastered by the same engineer, I'll happily re-purchase those as well. In the United States, the album spent 11 weeks on the Billboard 200 chart and reached its peak position of number 72 in February 1981.

I personally don't agree - I don't think there's all that much between any of the final four Jam LPs. The back cover of the album features an excerpt from Percy Bysshe Shelley's poem The Masque of Anarchy.
