Description

The area containing Avon Street, Bristol contains a higher-than-average level of social housing - 51% of household spaces. Many poorer areas lack a majority age group, which is due in part to the people in that area being constrained by circumstance rather than being able to choose where to retire, raise a family or grow up. g. Milsom Street, the Circus, Pulteney Bridge) at the same time as being there (I started the novel during a visit to what is one of my favourite cities in England).

This is a novel about a gang of criminals and extortioners in Bath in 1850 and how their victims try to fight back against them, in the face of indifference or active corruption from the local police and high society. The figures are therefore representative of the local area, not a specific street address or row of houses. For Scotland, 2011 data is shown (update coming soon, the Scottish census was delayed by a year unlike the rest of the UK). The area containing Avon Street, Bath consists predominantly of flats, which is common in inner cities, student neighbourhoods and poorer suburban settings. The author clearly has an eye for historical detail, but more importantly he created some plausible characters and gave them sufficient depth that I actually started caring about what was going to happen to them at the end.

The proposed development will relieve some of the housing pressure on residential areas in the city and provide high-quality accommodation and shared facilities in a superb location.

Being a local resident in the city I obviously found the setting really interesting, but you don't need to know Bath to enjoy this book. Chapman Taylor was commissioned to design the new developments to be architecturally striking landmarks and active and exemplary student accommodation. This is done to preserve the anonymity of the people in that area, as some postcodes cover a very small area, sometimes a single building.

The characters are very well drawn and even minor ones, such as the three year old daughter of one of them, are three dimensional and convincing. This may have been influenced by how people perceived their health aginst the backdrop of the pandemic. If you want your 'history' served with an expert but not over-lavish hand, Avon Street cannot fail to satisfy. This isn't a murder mystery as I thought it would be from the title, more a story about the lives of the other side of society to that portrayed in Austen's books of Bath. The story revolves around James Daunton's attempt to rid the notorious slum area of Avon Street of the malign but terrifyingly powerful Nathaniel Caine and his vicious gang of bullies and criminals. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others.
