Overall, Subnautica Below Zero is a fantastic game. I’ve never had so much fun exploring a world and screaming as Shadow Leviathans appear out of nowhere. I had a great time shouting after Sea Monkeys before eventually befriending them. The game has moments of terror but as you build bases and advance your tools you feel as if you are leaving your mark on this solitary world. Due to its graphical design, Subnautica Below Zero can experience frame dips on the Nintendo Switch but it runs well on PC and console platforms. You should see what the late game is hiding for yourself.The map itself is significantly smaller than the original Subnautica's, though. I couldn't help but feel disappointed when I reached the map edge only about 10 hours in and said to myself, "Wait… this is it?" Even so, it doesn’t feel small. If you played the original, you might have some idea why measuring by pure surface area can be misleading. And if you didn't, I'd prefer you get to see what the late game is hiding for yourself. But even Below Zero's deepest secrets don't measure up to the sheer scale of those in the main game. It makes this adventure come across more as a standalone expansion than a true sequel. Alongside returning mechanics such as oxygen, hunger, and thirst, players now have a body heat gauge which comes into play when walking on land. It functions much like the oxygen gauge does underwater. The player will gradually lose body heat and eventually die of hypothermia, unless they can replenish their body heat by jumping into water, consuming certain items or standing next to a heat source.
