What I would really like to see in a compact Rotary pedal is the trifecta of Rotary Footswitch functions - Fast / Slow / Brake courtesy of a second footswitch - and with proper stereo input and output! Dawner Prince recently came out with a stereo open cabinet revolving speaker emulator called Pulse, inspired by Pink Floyd’s legendary rotary speaker Doppola and Maestro Rover RO-1. It has separate controls for slow and fast rotation speed and a mix control. Inertia knob sets the time it takes for the ramping effect to go from slow to fast, while the Distance knob mimics the distance of the virtual microphone from the speaker. We need to stress that this guide doesn’t take into account pedals that aim at recreating a more faithful Leslie effect – see this other article about the best Rotary pedals for that category. As mentioned in the intro, the original Uni-Vibe was inspired by Leslie speakers, but the approximation of its emulation transformed it into something entirely new. We, therefore, consider modern rotary emulation as a separate category not covered here. However, the Gear4music extended warranty scheme provides an enhanced service, and is designed to offer a higher level of protection than many 'free' warranties offered by some retailers and manufacturers.

A simple 3-knob take on Jimi Hendrix’s favorite modulation effect. Vbe mode has its own sounds and flavor consisting in a subtle pitch modulation, while Chorus mode will activate the Color knob, which changes the phase relationship of the effected signal in relation to the dry one, which slightly modifies the tone’s character depending on the setting.

For Uni-Vibe I've long shared my admiration for the DryBell Vibe Machine and Dawner Prince Viberator - while I'm still holding out for updated versions with tap-tempo onboard - or at least a slow/fast speed alternative via second footswitch.

A faithful, hand-made recreation of the original Uni-Vibe, with updates to the power supply for a lower noise floor. Other notables are the AC Noises Ama V2, Analog Music Company & Noise Space Audio DS-1 Evil Pumpkin Mod, Iron Ether FrantaBit, Malekko Scrutator, and PLBR Effects Pizzacrusher which I also have. Please note that this extended warranty is currently only available on products sold within the UK, EU or EEA, and is subject to the terms and conditions as detailed on the extended warranty certificate provided.

What do people like about Soul Shiver?

An older, larger, no frills unit that’s still popular for its sound, it sports some of the same design features as the original Uni-Vibe, like the sinewave oscillator, bulb, and photocells. No expression pedal input. For Mini pedals it's between the Mooer Slow Engine and Outlaw Later Riser - when in doubt I always go for the Mooer - I have several of those, and they're usually pretty decent, and some are actually rather surprisingly good.

Interestingly you can also see a total match-up of categories for my favourite Digital Multi-Modulator Workstations - the GFI Synesthesia and Wampler Terraform - they have their Algorithm Selections spot on - while other workstations happen to be missing a couple or few of my favourites. This device’s circuit is as close to a Uni-Vibe replica as it gets. Built by the original manufacturer (although today’s Shin-ei has little to do with the one that released the original effect), this is a hand-built version of the Uni-Vibe using a mix of carefully selected new and old components, and designed to recreate the vintage unit’s exact sound and behavior, with a few modern improvements. We also included a list of Vintage Models featuring valued discontinued pedals that deliver an inspired take on the classic Uni-Vibe, and one with a selection of stompboxes that combine Rotary with other effects. This is another category that I've covered in part this year - and in fact I updated my #4 slot from the Mu-Tron Micro-Tron III to the recent Dr Scientist Dusk Dynamic Filter. I fully intend to get the Flower Pedals Hosta too - that is somewhat next on the list alongside the slightly larger BB-size Spaceman Effects Artemis Variable-State Filter. One of the most versatile Vibes around, from a company that for several years was fully invested in the Uni-Vibe niche. It has controls for depth of modulation, tone, input impedance (for using different guitars), and output volume. 6 side trimmers let you tweak a series of settings to tailor several parameters related to tone and functions. V3, a 10th-year anniversary edition, retains the same tone but delivers a modulation with deeper depth and character. Employing COSM-modeling technology, the BOSS RT-20 is slightly old in the tooth but still a popular stereo pedal, offering adjustable Rise Time, Horn and Bass speed, Overdrive, and more. It can also be used to create unique overdrive and pulsating effects. It offers a cool graphical view of the virtual rotors on its built-in display. Flanger is probably my favourite current modulation - actually I really love my core analog quartet of Harmonic Tremolo, Chorus, Flanger and Phaser - where it's the sort of BB-size ThorpyFX Camoflange which is very much my current Flanger of choice. I have 3 in this highlighted listing - Boss BF-2, Chase Bliss Audio Spectre, and the A/DA PBF Flanger. I fully intend to get the excellent and recently revamped Retro-Sonic Flanger and Subdecay Starlight at some stage too.
