Roles The investigation is the main part of the game and is separated into three rounds of play. These rounds are controlled by the Forensic Scientist and how fast they would like to give out clues. Each round has an evidence collection phase and a presentation phase and though the game can end early if an investigator correctly guesses all the needed information, the game will always end after the third round concludes. Deception: Murder In Hong Kong Review - The Thoughtful Gamer Deception: Murder In Hong Kong Review - The Thoughtful Gamer

As far as player count goes, we’ve enjoyed the game as much with 4 as we have with 9. With only 4 players it’s very difficult for the Murderer to escape. And with more players we love having an Accomplice and Witness in the game. All players have lost their chance to solve the crime (either because they made an incorrect guess or did not attempt to "Solve the Crime" by the end of the third and final round of Presentation). In this case, the Murderer (and Accomplice) win the game. Other than that, Deception has made a permanent home in our game closet. What could these clues possibly mean? Social deduction games are, generally, all about the chat, rather than the components. But, despite that, many of them often go the extra mile by adding some flair to the components that are included.

New Clue and Means Cards

When an Investigator does that successfully, the crime is solved and the Forensic Scientist and the Investigators win the game. Deception in Hong Kong is a murder mystery game where one of the players is the murderer. Players will each have one secret roll from an investigator, witness, accomplice, or the murderer. Depending on what role you get changes your win condition. The Chameleon A social deduction game that’s short but sweet The secret word for a game of The Chameleon is decided by a special grid.

It’s important, therefore, to have a very frank discussion beforehand, making it super clear that there is a social contract involved in these games. And, if you do even the tiniest thing to reveal your identity in a way not in keeping with the spirit of the game, the whole thing becomes a waste of time. Players take it in turns to add to a piece of art, gradually building up a picture of a secret answer pen-stroke by pen-stroke. The catch is that one of them must play along, but has no idea what they’re supposed to be drawing. The visual element of the game encourages players to think outside the box and creates extra space for ridiculous misunderstandings. The Forensic Scientist then sets out the Cause of Death tile in the center of the table and choses one of the 4 Location tiles to also set out. Then he draws 4 random Scene tiles and places them in the center of the table as well. It’s through these 6 tiles that he will give clues to the Investigators. The Forensic Scientist chooses 1 of 4 Location tiles to use. Important: If you do not make an attempt to solve the crime before the last player's third and final Presentation, you will lose your chance to do so. Use it. Don't lose it!Deception: Murder in Hong Kong is a social deduction game for four-to-twelve players. You are a team of investigators and have arrived at the scene of a murder. There’s just one big problem: the killer is among you, but no one else knows their identity!

Deception: Undercover Allies | Board Game | BoardGameGeek Deception: Undercover Allies | Board Game | BoardGameGeek

Some board games are all about strategic, skilful play. Others teach you the value of jolly cooperation. And then there are hidden role and social deduction games - the ones that encourage you to lie through your teeth to your family and friends. Best social deduction games The next stage of set up involves the role cards. The number of investigators can change depending on the number of players. In Deception: Murder in Hong Kong, each player first receives a secret role: Forensic Scientist, Witness, Investigator, Murderer, or Accomplice. Everyone then closes their eyes except for the forensic scientist, who instructs the murderer to open his eyes. The murderer does so, revealing himself to the scientist, and he points to one of the five murder weapons in front of them and one of their five pieces of evidence. [8] Even though we’ve seen many of the cards multiple times, it’s always random in what they can be paired with. Add to that the fact that there are plenty of scene tiles to keep every game unique and intriguing. The forensic scientist will then discard their clue and means cards and take the evidence tiles and shuffle them leaving the green and purple ones off to the side. The remaining tiles will be face down in a pile next to the forensic scientist. They will also get the rule book to read from the script provided. Badge TokensThis bite-sized variant features less bloodthirsty lycanthropes than the original, as the werewolves’ aim is simply to win by lying low. During the night phase, players take it in turns to perform actions, depending on their roles. A seer has the power to look at someone’s role card, but other characters like the robber and troublemaker can switch these around during the night. Deception is a game of bluffing and deduction. At the beginning of the game, players are secretly given role cards to determine if they are an investigator, murderer, forensic scientist, accomplice (optional), or witness (optional). The goal of the investigators is to uncover the truth while the murderer must deceive and mislead the team. Will the Investigators be perceptive enough to successfully solve the crime or will the culprit(s) accomplish the perfect crime and get away with murder? They have no way of knowing which is the Murderer and which is the Accomplice and they do not know how the crime was committed.
