A TROUBLED LEGACY The Blood Angels’ heritage is not altogether a sorrowful one. They carry much of Sanguinius’ grace and nobility within themselves, and echo his physical perfection. The Primarch’s spiritual might also flows in his descendants’ veins, its potency only increasing as the millennia pass. The Blood Angels are thus numbered amongst the most psychically gifted of all the Space Marine Chapters. The power of the Blood Angels Librarians flows from the Chapter’s conflicted duality. Your army is now all about Leaders attaching to give your units a boost – so you’re more likely to see a ‘rainbow’ of different units with their leaders, instead of a mass of similar combat units all clustered around the Icon and an Ancient like 9th Sanguinius did much to establish the culture and beliefs of the Chapter. He transformed the Blood Angels from an army of killers into a Legion of noble warriors that were also well-versed in art and poetry. [44c] There is a mystical streak in many of the Blood Angels and a strong belief that things can be changed for the better. This belief can be seen in everything they do: they strive for perfection be it in their works or art, martial discipline, or military doctrine. Due to their extended lifespans, Blood Angels have time to perfect their techniques in art as well as war. [1a] Today the Blood Angels are known for both their savage and grace. They seek to maintain ten defining commandments that they feel best exemplifies their Chapters soul. Through meditation, they maintain the Five Angelic Graces of Honour, Humility, Mercy, Restraint, and Forgiveness. In opposition to these are the five Warrior Virtues of Strength, Savagery, Abandon, Rage, and Detachment. Thus are the Blood Angels frenzied killers one moment while becoming stoic monks who appreciate arts and music the next. [109] The White Scars– formerly the V Legion Astartes – are renowned as both one of the most popular Space Marine chapters, and one of the hardest to paint. The sons of Primarch Jaghatai Khan, a.k.a. the Warhawk, the White Scars were briefly neutral in the Horus Heresy, before coming down firmly on the side of the Emperor. In the 41st millennium, they’re still going strong, and compliant with the Codex Astartes, counting many successor chapters to their name. During the Horus Heresy, a large portion of the Dark Angels legion turned to Chaos,leading to a huge, ultraviolent confrontation that saw the loyalist side victorious (but decimated), the planet Caliban itself shattered to bits, and the surviving traitor Dark Angels scattered out into the galaxy. Crusade and the Fluff

Good intentions only go so far, however, especially in a time as dark as this. For all their nobility, the Blood Angels and their successors are Chapters in decline. Each year brings a deepening of the madness, a worsening of the curse within their blood. Among some successor Chapters this phenomenon is especially pronounced, for their gene-seed was harvested at a time when the Flaw had already become far advanced. Tales abound of whole Chapters slipping slowly into blood-mad insanity, edging ever closer to the precipice as their inner darkness gains control. Names such as the Knights of Blood or the Crimson Swords have gone down in infamy, declared renegade by the Adeptus Terra or completely wiped out amid unwinnable conflicts of their own creation. Sanguinius’ glory was that of a demigod, for he was a mighty warrior and an inspiring leader, and his sons followed him with unquestioning devotion. All through the days of the Great Crusade and into the dark madness of the Horus Heresy, the Blood Angels fought at their Primarch’s side. Inspired by Sanguinius’ divine presence, the Blood Angels remained staunch in the Emperor’s defence to the very end. Their bolters blazed from the ramparts of the Imperial Palace even as the Warmaster came to seize his father’s throne, and the Blood Angels were amongst the first loyalists to know of Chaos’ defeat when Horus fell to the Emperor’s wrath. Finally, the Deathwatch continue their long vigil against the xenos menace with the most adaptable veterans in the Space Marines roster. They’re also startlingly effective against non-alien armies, which has caught more than a few traitors unawares.Despite the machinations of Horus Lupercal and the other traitors, Sanguinius and his Sons made it to Terra and fought in the siege of the Imperial palace. As the battle reached its peak, Sanguinius accompanied the Emperor onto Horus’ flagship, The Vengeful Spirit. The 9th Edition Space Marines codexwas released on October 10, 2020, so it’s available now. There is also a special Collector’s Edition available, if you fancy it. A variety of unique, sharp-fanged units, such as Thunderwolf Cavalry, Fenrisian Wolves, and the terrifying Wulfen, combine with powerful close combat buffs and stratagems, to make Space Wolves one of Warhammer 40k’s most powerful melee armies.
