The platter is made from medium density fiberboard and a wood-look veneer finish. While nicely built, the turntable is extremely light and doesn’t damp vibration as well as other turntables in the price range. In terms of using the Pro-Ject T1, everything was simple but there were no nice-to-have features that we loved from the Fluance turntables. Speed changes are a hassle as you need to remove the platter and move the belt to the correct pulley and there’s no auto-stop feature that protects your needle from excessive wear either like you do on the Fluance tables. Effortlessly simple to set-up and produces a highly engaging, accessible sound that really makes your records sing. Made in Europe, and featuring only premium materials – there is no plastic where it shouldn’t be, as every component part is made to the same exacting standards as far more expensive designs. ProJect have a passionate belief in the importance of true stereo sound, and their turntables are a key part of that. One feature I did miss on the T1 BT was the speed control; for my money, I would rather have this feature than Bluetooth connectivity. We would've liked a bit more detail at the bottom end, as louder songs such as F.I.N.E. and Don't Get Mad, Get Even had a tendency to sound a little cluttered at times. However, the T1 excelled in the mid-ranges, with some of Joe Perry's fretwork sounding smoother than a cashmere codpiece; and the treble, while not always entirely crisp, was more than acceptable. Pro-Ject T1 review: The competition There is no speed selection on the T1, so switching from 33 ⅓ rpm to 45 RPM will require removing the platter and moving the belt to the appropriate pulley on the motor. This is a bit cumbersome, especially when lower-priced turntables like the Fluance RT81 include a speed selection/power knob. Like a well-designed watch, looks are important when buying a record player. An attractive turntable can liven up a room, and that's precisely what Pro-Ject Audio's T1 BT does. After entering my apartment for the first time in more than a year, my friend's first words were “Wow, that looks pretty.” But the model he was admiring is a redesigned version of the T1 BT from Houseplant, a new company from actor and comedian Seth Rogen and his creative partner Evan Goldberg that sells cannabis and cannabis lifestyle accessories. All three versions are based around an entirely plastic-free, CNC-machined one-piece plinth that, according to the manufacturer, contains no hollow spaces. This helps to minimise unwanted vibrations within the chassis. Pro-Ject is clearly quite big on this particular topic, as the T1 also features purpose-chosen turntable feet designed to isolate the system from ambient vibrations, plus a heavy, zero-resonance glass platter. Whatever you do, don't mistake it for a microwave plate.

The Planar 1 doesn’t quite possess Pro-Ject’s ability to wrap its arms around you and hug; it’s a leaner performance, which musically we prefer, but might not sate those coveting a taste of home cooking. That said, we are reviewing the base model T1, which means it doesn’t come with a phono pre-amp nor Bluetooth. DesignAlso worth noting is the T1’s compatibility with aptX HD, which is increasingly becoming standard on new equipment, thus improving the sound of Bluetooth connectivity further. There’s a strong sense of balance, with a tight, well-rounded bass response without being too overpowering. Each instrument is easy to place within the soundstage and the delivery is confident and dynamic, just like the E1. Unlike many other turntables around this price, the Pro-Ject T1 BT has all the elements of a proper hi-fi turntable - just at a lower price. The T1 record player boasts premium materials, stylish aesthetics, a rich, lively sound and an accessible price. It can also be accommodated into almost any environment thanks to its multiple finish options and three output versions. The sound has the same overall sense of balance that I know and love from the very affordable Ortofon OM5E, but with greater focus and detail. The turntable definitely feels more solid to operate; the added weight really does make a great deal of difference, and I did find the E1 was on the light side, causing the plinth to slide around easily. The Pro-Ject T1 is classic Pro-Ject design with clean lines and no frills. The turntable houses a built-in belt drive motor and spindle, which should help with isolating some vibration from the motor. Listening to the Pro-Ject T1, sound quality was completely adequate but failed to capture the magic of recordings.
