All this and I was encourage to relax in slacks, and reassured that my corduroy-clad frame was in the company of a wise, wise captain of literature. Ayoade co-wrote the stage show Garth Marenghi's Fright Knight with Matthew Holness, whom he also met at the Footlights, appearing in the show with Holness at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2000 where it was nominated for a Perrier Award. In 2008, Ayoade directed the music videos for two Vampire Weekend singles: " Oxford Comma", filmed in one long take, [10] and " Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa".

Starting it I was quite amused by the tone and asides and pedantic stylings that are so familiar to Ayoade's comedy.I would say you must know a lot about films and directors, but I don't and I still enjoyed this book. For example, one exchange runs like this: “I read somewhere that you regard your Jewish identity as being important to you. Richard, who is half-Nigerian, was reportedly furious at this, and told Laurence: ‘You have never encountered racism. Ayoade provided his voice to the main cast of Channel 4's ill-received animated sitcom Full English, which aired for just five episodes in 2012 before being cancelled.

Ayoade's interviews are totally ridiculous, however, and this is not a book to read if you want to learn anything purely factual about him. Richard Ayoade is many things – film director (of Submarine and the forthcoming The Double), comedy actor (The IT Crowd), comedian and TV presenter (Gadget Man). Ayoade was featured in Paul King's 2009 film Bunny and the Bull, playing an extremely boring museum tour guide.A laborious ten-part interview between a question-filled Ayoade and a pompous caricature of Ayoade provides the bulk of the book, serving as a satire of classic director interview series like François Truffaut’s Hitchcock and, more immediately, as a satire of fame and the business of self-promoting all couched in the midst of hilarious jokes. Sure, it doesn't flag, provide too many missteps or outstay its welcome, but it starts in one measured furrow and hits the hedge having deviated little. Ayoade has frequently appeared on panel shows, most prominently on The Big Fat Quiz of the Year, and served as a team captain on Was It Something I Said? He added: ‘I want to to make it clear, I’m not talking about trans people, I’m talking about trans rights activists.
