Description

The Putrid Blightkings represent most of your army: slow but resilient with 3” movement, Toughness 4 and 25 wounds (30 for the Blightlord). They have similar weapon profiles but at least two have a special ability that differentiates it from the others.

Related, sort of...how does Snorri work with the Mark of Nurgle? Does it depend on who's turn it is, as to which takes precedence? Many and varied are the weapons with which these blessed few perpetuate the cycle of life and death. They range from those which typify the tribes of the north, such as bone-crushing flails and flesh-hewing axes, to far stranger tools of destruction that echo the proclivities of their divine patron. Some of their number boast insectile appendages, others battle scythes, or staffs that carry massive verdigris-stained bells, each clanging out a sonorous death toll as its wielder caves in the skulls and ribcages of their foes. [1a] But how does a Nurgle army play on a tabletop? First let’s go through the main rules for this army. If you play it well, this force has a wide variety of tools that include counters for almost anything you’ll run into in the meta. Maggotkin of Nurgle is a faction of the Grand Alliance Chaos and represents one of the major Chaos Gods: Nurgle.

On the Field

When Alarielle took advantage of Nagash’ demise by launching herself a powerful ritual that replaced the deathly energies with life, awakening primordial forces, Nurgle saw an opportunity to corrupt this blooming abundance. The Plague Drones will team up with the Lord of Afflictions as a highly-offensive,***** fast-moving unit that can easily move 17-19” before charging in the first turn of the game They are not guaranteed but they are useful weapons in your arsenal that would force your opponent to decide how to handle them. Another big vote for Gyros, and a smaller for Rangers. If they do go big with this unit and deathstar it, the same tactics used against the dreaded Gutstar work quite well as these dude are slower! Chaff 'em, chaff 'em, chaff 'em, and score points elsewhere.

The Sorcerer, with a Sorceress model available as well now, excels in debuffs: on a 5+ for each of the 3 dice rolled damages by 1 an enemy fighter and reduces the Toughness by 1 (to a minimum of 1). The Poxbringer is a wizard that would go in pair with Plaguebearers, but does too little to be remarkable. For the model’s body, I decided to use the Blightking with a monstrous belly mouth and a long slavering tongue. While I was particularly fond of the toothed maw and the tongue, I was less thrilled about the severed head wrapped in the tongue of the model. Since it is plastic (and not metal…), I decided it was worth the extra effort to carve off the severed head. I am pleased with the results and feel it accentuates its length and and hideous dexterity. At this point, I could have easily stopped, leaving the rest of his bloated body intact, rupturing through the rest of his armour completely. I decided it was worth experimenting with remnants of his former breastplate. To to this, I took a small saw and cut the body of a Cataphractii terminator in half. Afterwards, I used an xacto knife to hollow the rest out such that it could layer on top of the Blightking’s body. I still have to do a little more work to get the the breastplate to fit properly. The shoulder placement on the Blightkings is much different than the standard terminator. I also added two severed cables (from Dragon Forge games) coming from the breastplate to make it look like the mouth in his stomach tore open his armour.

All Champions of Chaos hope the eyes of their gods stare down upon them whilst they go about their violent work. With the Putrid Blightkings, it is all but certain. They are fully aware that their lord has not only selected them individually for glory, but also passed a little of his boundless strength onto them so that they might fulfill the destiny apportioned to them. [1a] The other part that contributes to the resilience of the army is their 5+ ward (an after-save ability to negate a wound) and their ability to heal units in their own hero phase. Both ward and healing can be improved using various mechanisms and rules of the Maggotkin of Nurgle army. Virulent Discharge (Double, Everyone): A chance (on a 4+) to allocate up to 6 damage to an engaged enemy. Of all Chaos Gods, Nurgle is the most jovial and benign. As mortals struggle to cope with the concept of their own mortality, Nurgle can allure them with promises to end their grief and distribute his boons generously.Thrice-ripened Death’s Hand (Double, Lord of Blights): A chance to do some random damage depending on ability value and dice roll (up to 12) to a 7″ away fighter.

Fecula Flyblown is at all effects a Rotbringer Sorcerer with two Putrid Blightkings as bodyguards ( The Wurmspat). This group is a Warhammer Underworlds warband from Season 3 (Beastgrave). Fecula herself is an interesting wizard with the ability to cast two spells in the same phase once per game. The bodyguards can absorb the damage directed to her on a 4+. I can see a tooled up Organ Gun (Accuracy and an ME to babysit) as being effective to take on smaller groups of these guys. Unless they're in cover, long range has you hitting on 3's, wounding on 4's, and only what, a +6 AS?Fast forward to the end of 2019 and we saw some adjustments – reducing the consistency of the Locus of Diversion and lowering the ability to summon during the game. This, combined with the loss of realm artefacts, pushed the army down firmly into the fat middle.* They’re still competitive, despite not ruling the top tables anymore. Though they lost the greater part of their number to Imperial sorties and the cannon fire from Brass Keep's walls, the Repugnauts were finally able to break the fortress when they invoked Nurgle's favour to pollute the stone of the castle itself and hence infect the greater part of its defenders. They took the fortress, but the armies of the emperor finally repelled Undra Kul's invasion, and the Repugnauts and their fellow warriors were left defending a staging post that never saw reinforcement. [1b] The term glass cannon means an army that hits especially hard, but shatters when it takes a little bit of damage.
