Just wow. This comic has to be one of the greatest things I've ever read. I don't mean to hype it up too much, but I was personally blown away. See, I was expecting this to be more of a biography. It does have those elements and I did learn more about Miyazaki's life, but I was hoping for something more specifically about the man behind the movies, rather than just getting film criticism. The biographical elements are scattered here and there and, honestly, you don't learn much that you probably couldn't learn from reading his Wikipedia. For example, we don't get any more insight into his tumultuous relationship with his son. Above all, Nausicaä is reminiscent of my favourite Miyazaki film, Princess Mononoke. Like that film, Nausicaä is much more serious and adult than Miyazaki's more whimsical works, like My Neighbour Totoro or Kiki's Delivery Service. Whereas most Miyazaki films feel like fanciful fairy tales, Nausicaä is a full-blown high-fantasy epic, complete with a fleshed out world with its own history, geography, flora and fauna. Nausicaä is also surprisingly bleak, and often quite violent. But despite this, at its heart, this comic is full of the hope and goodness that shines through everything that Miyazaki produced.Tokuma Japan Communications. Tokuma Shoten. CINEMAS+ (in Japanese). Archived from the original on July 17, 2023 . Retrieved September 11, 2023. Hayao Miyazaki is one of Japan’s most beloved animation directors. His first feature, The Castle of Cagliostro, was released in 1979. His film Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, based on his own manga, was released in 1984. In 1985, Miyazaki cofounded Studio Ghibli, through which he directed the box office smashes Princess Mononoke (1997) and Spirited Away (2001), which won the Golden Bear at the 2002 Berlin International Film Festival and the Academy Award® for Best Animated Feature Film in 2003. Howl’s Moving Castle (2004) received the Osella Award for technical achievement at the 2004 Venice International Film Festival. In 2005, VIFF awarded Miyazaki the Golden Lion Award for Lifetime Achievement. This is absolute must reading for those who love comics. But the scope of the story reaches beyond comic lovers, this is something that someone who doesn't generally read comics should at least try reading imo. It is the apotheosis of the art form.Harza, Adriana (March 8, 2021). "Ghibli Producer: Hayao Miyazaki's 'How Do You Live?' Film's Animation Is Half Finished". Anime News Network. Archived from the original on March 10, 2021 . Retrieved March 13, 2021. I am a fan of Hayao Miyazaki and for me his films have always inspired a sense of wonder and awe. Every frame communicates a mood or an emotion that lets us get into the characters and immerse ourselves into the world. His movies do not shy away from dealing with darker themes but they have this vitality and they leave me with a sense of hope. Maybe this has partly to do with how Miyazaki works. Rather than starting with a script he always starts with and works through images. This allows the script and the film to grow organically as he draws. It is always the characters will that drives the story and they end with the characters emotional growth as they learn and adapt. This also makes his worldbuilding to be so full of life. We also look at his worlds through the eyes of his protagonists who are more often than not kids who are open minded and "see with eyes unclouded". He is also a master animator who can communicate a lot just through the movement of his characters.
