Eleven-year-old Edie Eckhart and her best friend Oscar are excited to be starting secondary school together, so are devastated when they are put into different classes. Sophie loved this one and is already hoping for more middle-grade books from Rosie Jones in the future and more from Edie Eckhart too. This quote not only describes how I felt when I read this book, but beautifully illustrates the feelings I had as a child in primary school. However it takes some friends to point out that just maybe she does use her disability to hold herself back. I get it, you like Edie, but you can also see that this girl doesn’t understand that there is more than one kind of love, instead of being grumpy or jealous, just give her some more bigger hints.

My friend's ten year old absolutely loved it too, and had lots to say about how much she liked the characters and how much she had learned about cerebral palsy from the character of Edie.Rosie’s The Amazing Edie Eckhart series is inspired by her own experiences of navigating a school with cerebral palsy. The Amazing Edie Eckhart follows Edie, a pre-teen with cerebral palsy, as she starts senior school and discovers her love of the performing arts. It’s a wonderfully funny book which includes all types of family, love, responsibilities, abilities and emotions. But as the year progresses, Sam begins to find a new hobby and realises that actually, it isn’t all bad.

This book beautifully brings to life the difficulties young people feel about fitting in and negotiating friendships as they start a new chapter in their life. However, the road is not smooth and at the Halloween disco Ben and April find their friendship tested. Great for fans of Jacqueline Wilson and this is a particularly great book for children either about to start or just started secondary school. She starts secondary school and discovers that she's been put in a different class to her best friend, Oscar. A lot of books centre around self-discovery and coming out, but this story explores family and community relationships. We follow Edie's struggles with missing Oscar, making new friends, becoming braver than she's ever had to be before and figuring out why getting a boyfriend isn't the be-all and end-all of her new life.

What’s worse is Edie’s parents and home teacher think it’s a good thing, that she should make new friends. I just loved reading this dairy and I had a laugh at the beginning, because in the beginning of the diary Edie was not a fan. The book has gentle messages about the importance of mindfulness, doing what you enjoy and looking after yourself as well as the importance of communicating with others. From Scottish author William Sutcliffe comes a laugh-out-loud story about moving to a whole new school environment. However, I would say that the front cover illustration makes the book seem like it's for a younger audience than it would suit.

She was awarded second place in the Leicester Mercury's New Comedian of the Year in 2018, and her star has been on the rise ever since. When an unexpected opportunity presents itself, Edie discovers that she has previously unrecognized talents and interests, and even begins to make some new friends of her own, but can she do it all without losing her best friend in the process?

Not only is it a hugely entertaining story but it’s lead to some really interesting discussions with my daughter. I loved hearing how Edie described herself and her life and the fact that the dilemmas revolved around all the usual pre-teen stuff. But her mom promised her some money if she would keep on writing because mom thought it would be good for Edie to get her thoughts on paper.I hope this isn’t the end of Rosie Jones writing as I think she could take this character further or introduce us to other children who have additional needs.
