Geoffrey Canada is the founder of the Harlem Children’s Zone, which has a 100% graduation rate. We have millions of young people walking away from education, he says. But “right now, we could save them all”, if we’re prepared to innovate fundamentally and not just do more of the same. He sees schools everywhere following the same dull routines as when he was at school over 50 years ago, “and no-one is going crazy enough about it to say that enough is enough … America can’t wait another fifty years to get this right.”

I think it was Phyllis Diller who said that we spend the first three years of a child's life teaching them to walk and to speak and the next twelve years at school telling them to sit down and shut up. We shouldn't be surprised if many of them find it difficult. Young children have great physical energy and a deep curiosity for the world around them." (p. 73) I meet some people, quite a lot of people actually, who feel they don’t have any real talents. They don’t have any special talents to speak of. Also, they don’t much enjoy the work they do, if they do work. They don’t enjoy their lives all that much. You know what I’m talking about, don’t you? I’m not saying it’s true of you, but you know, it’s true of a lot of people. It shares the same primary philosophy and works as a somewhat practical self-improvement manual to go with the theoretical groundwork set in “The Element.” And we’re here to share with you the best bits.Let’s go! As we said, you’re neither a rabbit nor a rose, and you can be anything you want to, even against the circumstances. You probably have at least one of them, or maybe even more than a handful! You just need to open your eyes to discover them. You need to stay alert and think globally rather than locally. Because you can become a good bobsledder even if you’re living in Jamaica! How would you find that out if you’re not watching the Olympics and dancing to the beat of your heart?

Finding Your Element” By Ken 8 Lessons Learned From Reading “Finding Your Element” By Ken

With his signature wry wit, Robinson offers a series of practical exercises to help you discover your own talents and passions. Along the way, he tells the stories of many "ordinary" people in all walks of life who have overcome obstacles of every sort to find their Element. And he explores fundamental principles and vital questions to help you find yours: What are you good at? What do you love? What makes you happy? Where are you now? Your answers to these and many others will provide you with invaluable keys to discovering your Element. When you’re in your Element, your sense of time changes. If you’re doing something that you love, an hour can feel like five minutes; if you are doing something that you do not, five minutes can feel like an hour.” The book is full of thought-provoking information, suggestions, and case histories, but what might be most valuable are the self-exploration questions the author proposes at the end of each chapter. Here’s a sampling: Although mindfulness does not remove the ups and downs of life, it changes how experiences like losing a job, getting a divorce, struggling at home or at school, births, marriages, illnesses, death and dying influence you and how you influence the experience. . . . In other words, mindfulness changes your relationship to life.” There’s quite A simple reason to why so many people are unable to correctly anticipate the lives they are going to actually lead: life is not linear, but organic. And the people we think of as highly talented are among those who have found that particular talents. The people often think they’re not specially talented, it’s often I think because they simply don’t know what lies inside them. They haven’t had the opportunity to find that yet. Sir Ken Robinson, Ph.D, is an internationally recognized leader in the development of creativity, innovation, and human potential. He advises governments, corporations, education systems, and some of the world's leading cultural organizations. His 2008 talk on how schools kill creativity is still the most watched video on TED.com with over 13.5 million views to date.

Outside of school, though, we were often defined by our disabilities. We were “handicapped”—a bit like a species. Often when people have a disability, it’s the disability that other people see rather than all the other abilities that coexist with their particular difficulty. It’s why we talk about people being “disabled” rather than “having a disability.” One of the reasons that people are branded by their disability is that the dominant conception of ability is so narrow. But the limitations of this conception affect everyone in education, not just those with “special needs.” These days, anyone whose real strengths lie outside the restricted field of academic work can find being at school a dispiriting experience and emerge from it wondering if they have any significant aptitudes at all.” Full text of educator Sir Ken Robinson’s talk: “ Finding Your Element”. In this talk, Sir Ken Robinson, offers a guide to finding and being in your element. He provides basic principles and tools to help guide us to do the work we enjoy with a sense of contentment and purpose. I give up. Robinson makes great points and gives some good advice but I found the book to be repetitive sometimes and boring. I first read Robinson's "The Element," which was a good read and was suffused with personal stories that drew me in and sparked my interest in the book. I expected the same in "Finding the Element," however, it doesn't contain as many personal stories. "Finding the Element" is more of a guide and contains more facts and advice. My interest was not deterred simply because of this. It's possible that I found it a bore because I'm just not ready to read it (not in the frame of mind to be patient with it). I was interested in the topic and willing to read and apply the advice given but I was still bored. It just didn't work for me. Make a list of your strengths and weaknesses. Believe us: life would have been better if this had been one of your regular schoolwork exercises! After all, how should you choose the right college or the appropriate career later on if you don’t know what you’re really good at? Do yourself a favor and find out! Viața este organică și nu liniară, traseul vieții nu poate fi planificat. Singurii care pot fi planificați sunt următorii pași.

Second principle: You create your own life.

In my own personal circumstance, I know what I am passionate about and I have a plan to pursue it, but I still have a couple of years until I expect to make the transition. I liked the anecdotes and the reflections of others as they pursued their own Element, but I was a bit surprised that many of the quotes that I copied down to include in my review were from others. Sir Ken Robinson, PhD, is an internationally recognized leader in the development of creativity, innovation, and human potential. He advises governments, corporations, education systems, and some of the world's leading cultural organizations. The videos of his famous 2006 and 2010 talks to the prestigious TED Conference have been seen by an estimated 200 million people in over 150 countries. Hello and welcome! I’m Ken Robinson, and I want to talk to you about how people can discover their true talents and passions and the difference it makes in their lives if they do that. It’s what I call Finding Your Element. Finding your element is about discovering what lies within you and, in doing so, transforming what lies before you.
