Description

A blood-soaked modern fairytale brimming with magic, spectacle, and unforgettable characters.” —Katy Rose Pool, author of There Will Come A Darkness As though I needed another reminder of our story,” Innes murmured. “But plenty of Thorburns have used the Mirror and claimed the Tower, and nothing’s happened.” With that, her sister began to climb. Wrought iron lanterns winked at Briony from the stone walls as she followed, as did the Tower’s powerful warding spellstones lodged within the mortar. According to the Thorburns’ many fairy tales, their first champion had embedded the crystals herself to defend against her enemies. I loved seeing the characters overcome the brainwash their parents gave them and how they understood how to become their own persons and take their destiny in their hands, even if it meant taking heartbreaking choices. Every single character in this book is morally grey, and sometimes downright villainous, but when you are doing wrong for what could ultimately be a good reason, how wrong can it be. How far is too far to go before you cross that point of no return....

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is another teenage death tournament, but it differs from All of Us Villains by focusing more on wider societal ills than personal trauma and is a dystopia rather than a fantasy. Six of Crowsby Leigh Bardugo is one of my all-time favorite books. Like All of Us Villains, it is a duology with multiple POVS, morally suspect protagonists, and queer romance. I grew to love all of the characters involved in the tournament, from Briony’s unwavering determination, to Gavin who had a point to prove, Finley who is just lovely, headstrong Isobel and Alistair, a boy chased by demons. And Reid was an unexpected and interesting element, the curse maker who seemed to be more at the forefront than anyone would have expected….

A curse Briony had always seen as an honor. A curse Briony had dreamed about being part of for her entire life.

First of all, in All of us villains I was very invested in Alistair and Isobel and I didn’t pay that much attention to the other characters, so it was probably genius to split them in this book, so I was interested in the entirety of the story. they had more than a common enemy: they shared a common cause. And they were ready to fight for it . . . During your commute: If you take public transportation or have a long commute, you may find it helpful to use that time to read. The ending was unexpected, and a bit of a gut punch if I'm honest - but that's all I'll say on the matter (no spoilers here!)
